Soul Flow YogiSoul Flow Yoga Studio

Hi Soul Flow Yogis,

I joined a virtual meditation circle this week and our focus is on Sri or Beauty - just taking a few minutes each day to stop, think and most importantly recognize the beauty in our lives.

As I sit down to write the welcome section of this month's newsletter - celebrating our 1 year anniversary (can you believe it?!) -  I bring my meditation here.  We started the studio to create a space of joy, peace, acceptance and tranquility for our personal practice and to share, believing that if we were craving such a space, others were as well.

I looked out at a recent Gentle class during Svasana and had to take a moment to just breathe and appreciate what was before me:  and Octogenarian celebrating life, a mother fighting cancer, a mother of 2 small children needing a little peace, a grandmother, a teacher, and a high school football player in search of greater flexibility.  To me, this is beautiful, and this is the gift the studio has given to us this year.

We hope you'll help us celebrate this month, and we're looking forward to Year 2!  So as one of my favorite teachers says:  "Sit Well" and take a few minutes to appreciate the beauty in your life!

Sacred Chant Concert
Snatam Kaur, GuruGanesha Singh, Ramesh Kannan
Venue:
Druid Hills Baptist Church
1085 Ponce de Leone NE
Atlanta, GA 30306
Our first field trip - we're excited!  Snatam Kaur is one of our favorite artists - we play her music often, especially during Svasana.  Concert, chantfest, musical group meditation, a yoga class in melody . . . how best to describe a live performance by Snatam Kaur and her band?  It's all of these things and more. Crystalline and radiant, Snatam's voice is redolent of the simple yet powerful truth of the heart.

What is "OM"? and why is it always associated with Yoga? om

Om, pronounced a-u-m, is a single syllable mantra or bija.  Om is one of the oldest and probably the best known mantra, especially here in the West.  Om is said to be the sound of the Universe.

The following excerpt is taken from Yoga Journal, The Sound of Om by Richard Rosen

-Patanjali--who wrote the Yoga Sutra and is considered to be the father of classical yoga--taught that when we chant this sacred syllable and simultaneously contemplate the meaning of it, our consciousness becomes "one-pointed: and prepared for meditation. In a commentary on the Yoga Sutra, the ancient sage Vyasa noted that through chanting om, "the supreme soul is revealed.". Chanting om may be the easiest way to touch the Divine within your very self.

Yogis often meditate on the four parts, of om. Though commonly spelled om, the mantra actually consists of three letters, a, u, and m. (In Sanskrit, whenever an initial a is followed by a u, they coalesce into a long o sound.) Each of these three parts has numerous metaphysical associations, which themselves serve as meditative seeds. For example, a (pronounced "ah") represents our waking state, which is also the subjective consciousness of the outer world; u (pronounced "ooh") is the dreaming state, or the consciousness of our inner world of thoughts, dreams, memories, and so on; and m is the dreamless state of deep sleep and the experience of ultimate unity.

By contemplating the meaning of each of these letters as we chant them, we are led through the three states of our ordinary consciousness to the mantra's fourth part, the anusvara (after-sound): om. The vibration slowly dissolves into silence, symbolic of the transcendent state of consciousness, equated with the Divine. This silence is the crown of the mantra; it is described as "tranquil, soundless, fearless, sorrowless, blissful, satisfied, steadfast, immovable, immortal, unshaken, enduring." -

Don't be intimidated by Om - rather relax, and if you're not comfortable chanting, listen and relish in the afteraffects, the vibrations that follow.

Tree Pose

1.  Stand in Tadasana. Shift your weight slightly onto the left foot, keeping the inner foot firm to the floor, and bend your right knee. Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle.

2.  Draw your right foot up and place the sole against the inner left thigh; if possible, press the right heel into the inner left groin, toes pointing toward the floor. The center of your pelvis should be directly over the left foot.

3.  Rest your hands on the top rim of your pelvis. Make sure the pelvis is in a neutral position, with the top rim parallel to the floor.

4.  Lengthen your tailbone toward the floor. Firmly press the right foot sole against the inner thigh and resist with the outer left leg. Press your hands together in Anjali Mudra. Gaze softly at a fixed point in front of you on the floor about 4 or 5 feet away.

5.  Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Step back to Tadasana with an exhalation and repeat for the same length of time with the legs reversed.
