Greetings!
Being different and distinct; that's what so many people say they want. Yet, it is so much safer to blend in and be like everyone else. We talk a lot about being our own person. Throughout our life, we have often tried to emulate someone else. I am Tiger Woods repeated a variety of children in an early Nike commercial. I Wanna Be Like Mike was the jingle endorsing Gatorade. It seems that if I wear what they wear or drink what they drink then in some small way I can be like them. Mankind always seems to be in search of someone else. We often live out our deepest fantasies through the books we read or the movies we watch. And interestingly enough, God desires that for us as well and wants to assist us into conforming to the image of His Son Jesus.
So, why are Christians called to be different and distinct? We often talk about being in the world but not of the world. What exactly does that mean? I am reminded of three phrases that may help explain. The first word is conflicted. Conflicted is what I would describe as the way believers feel as they try to live in two worlds simultaneously; calling themselves Christian but keeping one foot firmly planted in the world. The second word is double-minded; a word that had to be invented in order to fully understand what happens to believers who are neither different nor distinct. Stop and think; an unbeliever cannot be double-minded. This sad word is reserved for believers only. The last phrase is lukewarm. That is the temperature in which God spits us out of His mouth since He would prefer us to be hot or cold. This passage seems to indicate that God would prefer that we either be with Him or not with Him, but he absolutely abhors our trying to do both. All three of these phrases describe a pretty miserable image and existence as a believer. We are called to be different and distinct from the standard set by the world.
Today in your quiet time, ask God if you are living a life that is different and distinct from what the world is enticing you to be. Are you living a life that is different and distinct, conforming to the image of Jesus?

Family Camp at Mt Hermon
Mt. Hermon is a beautiful setting where you can meet with God while stretching your soul in his beautiful creation. The people and programs are ready to be God's blessing to you. Every person I've spoken with who has attended Family Camp at Mt. Hermon has had a wonderful time with God and others. Each detail is a blessing - the location, speakers, music, children's activities, and the pancake breakfast outdoors on the mountain ridge! That doesn't even mention the Redwood Canopy Ropes Course, archery, swimming pool, or the ice cream shop. You'll enjoy camp whether your single, married, have children still at home or not. When: Labor Day Weekend, August 31 to September 3 Where: Mt. Hermon Camp, near Santa Cruz Cost: Depends on housing you select from four different options. Overall cost is very reasonable for the room, great food, and wonderful activities available to you, especially when compared to a weekend road trip. Scholarship: available by completing the form online (called "camperships") For more info or to register, click here. Each person or family registers on its own and not as a group Finally, please let Pastor Brice know if you have questions and that you've registered so I can be looking for you on Labor Day weekend. |

Word of Encouragement
What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil-this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.
Ecclesiastes 3:9-14

Wisdom
"Ah! You know more about your ledgers than your Bible; you know more about your daybooks than what God has written; many of you will read a novel from beginning to end, and what have you got? A mouthful of froth when you have done. But you cannot read the Bible; that solid, lasting, substantial, and satisfying food goes uneaten, locked up in the cupboard of neglect."
C. H. Spurgeon
