The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Greetings!

Various tax reform proposals and concepts are under discussion on Capitol Hill that could impact the charitable deduction.  The charitable tax deduction could fall victim to the don't-raise-the-rates, lower-or-eliminate-the-deductions mantra. This is an excerpt from a church financial newsletter that we receive monthly that should be disturbing both to churches and Christians alike.

It led me to thinking about a question. Would I still give to the church if I could not get a tax deduction from the gift? If I have to ponder long about this question, I have a problem. And if Washington does away with charitable tax deductions altogether, how much would the church suffer? You have heard me say healthy giving is the sign of faithful people. It is my prayer that NOTHING would change and the health of our church would not be phased one bit.

One of our members recently visited an out-of-state church while visiting friends. They heard that church's stewardship sermon in which the pastor challenged those who are not tithers to give it a try. He asked people to tithe for three months and at the end of that time, if they had not been blessed, he would refund their money.

Wow! At first, I was surprised to hear that. But the longer I thought about it, I felt that was this pastor's interpretation of the verse in Malachi where the Lord says, test me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it (3:10).

We preach specifically on stewardship once a year at TBC. Yes, we hit it in several other ways throughout the year, but once a year we focus on stewardship during our budget building season leading up to Commitment Sunday.

As we all prepare to make our personal commitment this coming Sunday, I pray that we will truly search our hearts and determine to take God at his word. I hope we will step out on faith and truly understand that all we possess already belongs to God. We bring nothing into this world, will take nothing from it and everything in between is a gift from God. If I cannot live on the 90% that God expects me to keep, then I have a much bigger problem in life than tithing. Give it a try this year.

Commitment Sunday - October 9th
Don't forget your commitment card this Sunday as we prepare to commit our resources toward the 2012 budget. In both services on Sunday, we will have opportunity to bring our commitment cards and ask for God's blessing as our stewardship committee prepares our new budget. We will vote on our 2012 budget during the morning services on November 20th. Please remember to pray for our new treasurer, Jim Gillette, and John Frierson & the rest of the stewardship committee during this stewardship season.
New Youth Minister Presented
reynolds
Steve & Laura Reynolds are students at the seminary. Steve was selected by our youth minister search committee and will be presented to and voted on Sunday, Oct 9th, by the congregation. If affirmed, Steve will be offered the youth minister position. Please pray for our decision as a church and for Steve & Laura's decision should we decide to call them to serve both our youth and the youth of Marin.
New Deacons
You have nominated, they have been asked, and you have voted on the new group of deacons that will begin serving immediately after we commission them. Join us on Sunday, Oct 9th, at 6 pm as we spend time in worshiping and thanking God for Judy Good, Susan Prnjak, Carolyn Michaelian, Ray Fox, Jerry Lewis, Morgan Patterson, Don Comfort, Cheri Cavener and Jay Liu.

Deacons at TBC are literally servants of the church. Their responsibilities include preparation & distribution of the elements during the Lord's Supper, assistance with candidates during their baptism, and contact & prayer for our body through our deacon family ministry program. If you have not had contact with your deacon, click here or call the church and we will put you in contact.
California Mission Offering Goal Reached!
cmo

The annual mission offering that supports our California Southern Baptist Convention and related ministries all over the state is history and we surpassed our goal of $1500 by collecting $2040. This money will go all over our state to, as Dr. Whitaker puts it, "allow every man, woman, boy, and girl to hear about Jesus." Thanks to God for your generous heart.

Women's Ministry
women
On Saturday, Oct 1st, we had our Women's Ministry Team planning meeting. Thank you to Chrisine, Beth & Cecile for coming and offering up some great ideas as we look forward to seeing what God has in store for the women at TBC. Also, let me say thank you to those who took time to let me know of their interest in a variety of ministry areas at TBC. Please keep those ideas and suggestions coming! Here are a few things I want to bring your attention to for upcoming events:
  • Sundays October 2nd, 9th & 16th: College Shoebox Survival Kits - a table is currently set up providing cards with specific items for our dozen college students to receive a special survival kit (shoebox) filled with goodies. Although this is a church-wide participation, women's ministry coordinates the gathering and getting the boxes mailed to our students. Items can be brought to the table through Sunday, October 16th. Also, be sure to sign the letters that will be put inside the boxes for the students. We will be putting the boxes together the afternoon of the 16th at 3:00 -- anyone who can is welcome to come put the boxes together.
  • Sunday, October 23rd at 12:15: One of the areas that seemed to present a lot of interest is the Prayer Shawl Ministry. For those of you who are interested in learning more about this, we will be having an informational-only meeting immediately following the worship service on Sunday, October 23rd. We will briefly discuss how to get started in this ministry, dates, times, materials, etc. NOTE: you don't have to know how to knit - we'll all learn together or if you  do know how, you may be asked to assist in helping others to learn.
  • Saturday, December 17th 2:00-4:00: Our Christmas Teas date has been changed from December 3rd TO Saturday, December 17th. If you would like to host a tea in your home, please let Beth Patel or Janet Prescott know of your interest. Also, if you are not able to host one in your home but would like to lead out in a devotion in one of the homes, please let us know of your interest in that as well.

Looking forward to working with you in women's ministry. Blessings, Janet Prescott

Parent Summit
liu

Are you a parent who longs to be supported and better equipped to help your kids love God and respond to Him? Then you'll want to join us on Saturday, Oct 22nd, for a time of sharing, training and encouragement. TBC wants to partner with you in more significant ways so that we might better work together in this important responsibility. Whether you have a newborn or kids nearly grown, you will benefit from this time with God and with each other.

You'll learn about age-related discipleship needs of children, how to establish a regular devotional time in your home, and learn about resources that can help you along the way. There will be fun activities for your kids to do at the same time. Join us at 9 am on Oct 22nd at the church.  See Pastor Brice for more details.

Friendship Sunday
During a recent visit with a guest lecturer at the seminary, an idea surfaced that TBC will implement. Many times when the gospel is preached and the invitation time is given at the end of a service, people who have a personal relationship with Jesus often look around the sanctuary and wonder who is being invited to accept Jesus as Savior. They may think this does not apply to me.

On each 5th Sunday during the year, we are going to celebrate Friendship Sunday. On that day, the focus of the service will be very specifically and intentionally on the Good News of Jesus Christ. All aspects of the service will focus on evangelism. It is our hope that our regular attenders will invite their friends, who do not yet know Christ, to be their guests on this day.

The invitation on all other Sundays will still include a call to salvation, but the focus on a particular service may or may not be evangelism. Friendship Sunday will simply focus on presenting Jesus as our Savior and mankind's first and greatest need of salvation. We will offer a simple announcement on the Sundays prior to a 5th Sunday as a reminder.
Experiencing God Update
eg
Who knew? The simple answer is God. When we announced that we were going to do Experiencing God as a whole church, optimistic expectations would have been happy with 75 people participating. But God had different plans. We currently have 18 groups and about 190 people participating in what is proving to be an exciting time from the reports from various facilitators. On top of all this, we have several folks already desiring to take EG the next time around, so we are planning to start a new group or two in January. We praise God for what we are learning and eagerly anticipate what He has in store for us as a church.
Ministries in October
int students

Our ministry focus for Sunday, October 23rd, will be our English Club/international student ministry and our local mission efforts.  On that Sunday, you will get a glimpse of what is happening in these two areas of ministries. We encourage everyone at TBC to explore these to see where God might have you get involved.

Word of Encouragement

Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
