| Greetings! | |
Being different and distinct; that's what so many people say they want. Yet, it is so much safer to blend in and be like everyone else. We talk a lot about being our own person. At the same time, we often try to emulate someone else. I am Tiger Woods repeated a variety of children in an early Nike commercial. I Wanna Be Like Mike was the jingle endorsing Gatorade. It seems that if I wear what they wear or drink what they drink then in some small way I am supposed to be like them. Mankind always seems to be in search of someone else. We often live out our deepest fantasies through the books we read or the movies we watch. And interestingly enough, God desires that for us as well and wants to assist us into conforming to the image of His Son Jesus.
So, why are Christians called to be different and distinct? We often talk about being in the world but not of the world. What exactly does that mean? I am reminded of three phrases that may help explain. The first word is conflicted. Conflicted is what I would describe as the way believers feel as they try to live in two worlds simultaneously; calling themselves Christian but keeping one foot firmly planted in the world. The second word is double-minded; a word that had to be invented in order to fully understand what happens to believers who are neither different nor distinct. Stop and think; an unbeliever cannot be double-minded. This sad word is reserved for believers only. The last phrase is lukewarm. That is the precise temperature in which God spits us out of his mouth since He would prefer us to be hot or cold. This passage says that God would prefer that we either be with Him or not with Him, but he absolutely abhors our trying to do both. All three of these phrases describe a pretty miserable existence as a believer. We are called to be different and distinct from the standard set by the world. Our good news comes from I Peter 2:4-12.
As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him-you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," and, "A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall."
They stumble because they disobey the message - which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Disaster Relief Training
|
Are you interested in serving others in disaster relief. During recent prayer alerts regarding the tsunami in Japan and the tornadoes along the Gulf, we have talked about our Southern Baptist Disaster Relief program. In order to be prepared to participate, we include this info regarding the required training. A worker in a disaster area through Southern Baptist Disaster Relief must complete a Disaster Relief training course. Those completing the course will receive Disaster Relief identification which is required to enter a disaster area and the yellow Disaster Relief hat a Southern Baptist Disaster Relief distinctive. This training event is for new volunteers and for those who need to be retrained. The dates of the next training are this week, May 4-7, in Clovis, CA. Click here to get the details to register for this training event.

Explore Class
| |
Are you new to faith in Christ? Are you new to TBC? Are you new to Baptist life? Are you simply exploring the claims of Christ and the inner working of the church? Then the Explore Class was made for you. We will begin the next installment of this four-week event this coming Sunday on May 8th at 9:40 am at TBC. If you have a friend who would be interested in learning the basics of the Christian faith and what it means to be a member of Tiburon, we hope you will invite them and join the class with them. If you are already in a class, join us for the four weeks and then return to your class. We will gather in the first Gallery classroom.

Parents Training Kids
| Have you ever asked yourself, "What does it take to raise children?" If you're a parent, you've probably asked it many times. While no one has all the answers, as a community of faith, we want to address this issue with biblical standards and lean into the proven experience of those who are successfully raising children. Remember, parenting never really stops. On Saturday, May 14th, we will conduct a parent training workshop at TBC for parents with kids of all ages. Some of you who might not have kids yet are welcomed to join in the experience. This training will be an opportunity for parents to grow in skills related to the spiritual markers and milestones in your child's life. We'll seek answers to questions like: What is the call of God for parents to disciple their kids? How do home and church combine to provide the essential environment of love, trust, and pointing young ones to God? How can you step into everyday moments to listen for God's movement in the heart of your child? How can you implement and sustain a regular devotional time at home? There will also be great fun for your kids so bring the kids and make it a nice family day. Save the date on your calendar: Saturday, May 14. Stay tuned for more details coming this week from Pastor Brice as we prepare for this important time of training where all of us have something to learn. |

The larger team that will travel on June 27 includes: John & Stephanie Shouse, Eric & Lenora Kwok, Cheri Cavener, Craig Singleton, Brice Butler and Richard Sweatt. Be praying for Beth's trip and for the team trip coming later. Also, some of you who are unable to go on the trip will be able to support the team financially and also assist the families of those making the trip. If you would like to make a financial contribution to help the team with the purchase of airline tickets, make your check to TBC, mark the memo line Horn Mission Trip, and place it in the regular offering in an envelop that is also marked for the Horn Mission Trip.

| Word of Encouragement | |
"This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Luke 24:46-49
