The Rains are Coming!

Every year about this time, we begin to clean out the gutters to make sure they are clear for the coming rains of winter. We prepare for winter in a variety of ways and begin talking about anticipating sunshine almost immediately. Yet, we understand that we must have this season of rain regardless of the severity. Just as God provides rain to the earth, so he provides the rain in our lives. Some of these build into full blown storms. The severe storms require clean-up and rebuilding as the Gulf Coast experienced after Katrina. Many times the storms of life also require clean-up and rebuilding.

Some of you are aware that I transitioned from the visiting room to the classroom this fall at San Quentin. I teach eight men who fully and completely understand the storms of life; so much better than I ever will. As they continue to navigate life in prison, they have chosen to do so as men who are 100% sold out to the God who has completely overhauled their lives. One of my former students at the seminary asked what I was teaching this year and I shared that I was still teaching field education, but this year at San Quentin instead of on campus at Golden Gate. Without apology, I shared that these men exhibit a more genuine faith and commitment to the Lord than I have experienced from many in my campus classes. I do not mean to put any past or present seminary student down, but from top to bottom, these men have made a decision to walk by faith and not by sight; a decision that requires them to maintain a level of commitment virtually all the time. These men are far from perfect and they will be the first to say so, but I am convinced that if today Jesus were to select the type of men and women to be his disciples as he did in the first century, some of these men would be counted among his twelve. Each week I take that long walk from the prison facilities back to my car and am humbled at the level of commitment I experience with these men each week. I often pray that I could have the level of faith that these men show me week in and week out.

The rain is coming, both literally and figuratively, for all of us. We are constantly put to the test and our faith is required to maintain balance in this world. It is my prayer that as you weather the storms of life, you will not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but will be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will. May God continue to do a mighty work in you as you continue to become the person that he created you to be.    blessing from Pastor Glenn
Stewardship Commitment
Some of you missed Commitment Sunday a few days ago and thus missed your first chance to submit your commitment for our stewardship committee as they work on our 2011 budget. Your card is an important tool in the good work that our committee uses to measure our potential budget against anticipated income during the coming year. They don't actually see your card, but Pastor Glenn provides them with the bottom line of all the commitments that come in. If you need to get your card submitted, you can mail it or hand it directly to Pastor Glenn. If you still need a card, you can click here and print out a card. We want to thank you for providing this valuable information for us. May God richly bless you as you make this commitment to the Kingdom of God and to TBC.
Youth Update
The search is on for our new youth minister. Resumes are being accepted until Oct 15 to be followed by interviews. Our next Friday Fun Night is scheduled for Oct 15 (we may change this due to PSAT the next day). Details will be emailed to our youth and their parents once we finalize the date and the plans for that night. We want to encourage all youth to join us each Sunday morning at 9:30 for Bible study and again at 6 pm for our time together upstairs. We are sharing our faith stories this fall and learning that everyone has one. While we encourage our kids to invite their friends, we encourage all of our adults to invite families with teenagers to any and all of our events. If you have any questions regarding our youth ministry, email Pastor Glenn.
Bobbe Benjamin
Many at TBC and some who have moved away will remember Bobbe Benjamin's loving care for our children every Sunday and Wednesday for many years. The church has recently received word that Bobbe's health is failing and hospice has been called. We would like to express appreciation to Bobbe for what she has meant to our fellowship through the years and thank her for the contribution she made to the lives of so many children and their families. Some of these children are now married with children of their own. What a beautiful tribute to Bobbe if you would take a moment to write a note of thanks and remembrance. We are asking you to do this while Bobbe can enjoy it rather than waiting to share such words at a memorial service.

Fall Music Festival
This event is always a wonderful evening of celebrating God's gifts of music, children and fellowship together. Our preschool & parent music group led by Jennifer Gillmer will be singing, as well as our children's choir. They are also working on a song to sing together.  Also children's and adult handbell choirs will be playing along with our adult choir singing. We will also have some special treats as individuals share their talent. Join us on Oct 24th at 6 pm and we invite you to invite a friend or a family with children. This evening always brings a smile to faces as we share in a wonderful evening. This is a great opportunity to see our church at work!
Open House
You are invited to an Open House for the new Gilead House construction on Sunday, Oct 24, from 10:30 to 2:30. Stop by on your way home from church at 1024 Seventh Street at Grant Avenue in Novato. Tours will be given by past & current residents and board members. There is still much to be done, but this is an opportunity to see what the Lord has accomplished so far. Light refreshments will be provided and we hope to see you.
Gunfight at the TLC Corral
If you are age 55+, the senior adult group (aka TLC) would like to invite you to a day of skeet shooting and a delicious bar-b-que on Friday, Oct 29. Wisdom
And what is this valley called? We call it now simply Wisdom's Valley: but the oldest maps mark it as the Valley of Humiliation.
 C.S.Lewis
from The Pilgrim's Regress

Word of Encouragement
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
I Timothy 5:17
