Greetings!

Continuing on the New Year tradition of "best" and "worst," yes, we have a list.  Do you?

"Best" on-site clinic ideas, mostly from last year:

-  Companies have successfully merged local efforts with other companies in the past year to make on-site resources  available across geographic regions.  Yeah, it can work!

-    Several examples exist now where retail has been integrated with on-site services to show that there can be some synergy.  We know, we told you it could not be done.  Our "new" New Year motto will be, "We are wrong once in a while!"

-    Remote services erupt in the workplace and "tech trumps touch" in some key areas.  Most pronounced seems to be EAP (employee assistance programs) where remote is something that fosters higher levels of confidentiality.  Moral of the story - buy Cisco stock.

"Worst" on-site clinic ideas, from years past and from general experience:

-  Hospitals, brokers, and insurance companies enter the on-site vendor fields, and they do so for obvious reasons.  Some do this stuff right, and some do it wrong.  There are many examples where the results are not just bad -- they are very bad!

What do you see? Do you have a prediction or a projection? What will be the important trends to watch in the coming year? Join the discussion on the Web site, and we will publish some of the comments here.

Updated Vendor List on Web Site
We have updated the vendor listing on the www.onsiteclinics.org

Web site to allow you to more easily find the listing and the information about each vendor.  We hope this is helpful.

We sometimes find new vendors out there, but are unable to "vet" them for the site due to a lack of information.  If you are a vendor, not listed, or if you know of a vendor not on our site, please feel free to contact us to provide us with information about the firm so we can determine whether it might be appropriate to add them.

Intel Adds On-Site Clinics for Employees

We have already noted this on the Web site, but felt, due to the fact that it involves Intel, such a well-known, high-tech corporation, it was worth mentioning it in the newsletter, as well.

Intel recently announced that it will open two on-site clinics for its employees:  One will be at it's Ronler Acres Campus and the second one at the Jones Farm Campus.  Both are in Oregon.  They chose Take Care Health Systems to partner with for this service. (which already manages more than 375 such centers across the U.S.).  The sites will offer physician, physician therapy, nurse practitioners, lab drawing, and health coaches.  The Jones Farm Campus alone has 5,700 employees, plus dependents.  Our question is will one physician be enough once acceptance levels peak?

Intel is calling these "Health for Life Centers," which we think is very appropriate.

New Association Forming - On-site Clinics to Organize

The opportunities for collaboration and sharing are endless.  We expect to have a whole library of helpful documents "on tap" for the membership, as well as an array of "user group" functions.  The organization will be integrated with the Web site (www.ONSITECLINICS.org), but it will also have an affiliation with other complementary organizations and a direct affiliation with a major business group that is already in the health care cost management "space."  We are excited about this development, and I welcome comments, ideas, suggestions for key board candidates, etc.  We will also be putting together a medical director "panel" that will focus on the clinical challenges, and we would love to hear your ideas for that group, as well.

The New Year is going to bring a new association specifically dedicated to on-site clinic services.  Watch this space and the Web site for additional information.  I can tell you that it will launch fast and that it will be driven by, and focused on, employers.  It will welcome vendor participation in the direct support of the employer efforts to get a better handle on the common issues facing the on-site health forces that are shaping the industry.  Read more here . . .

Okay, who knows what an "ambulatory care ICU" is?  Neither did we, until a week ago.  We will share a new term for an old concept in the next newsletter.  Also coming up, news about some major industry leadership changes and a couple (maybe more) new entrants.  We are waiting for "official permission" to let you in on some information that we know to be much more than just rumors.

Next issue will also include a rundown on the Global Dynamics Conference and on HBCE.  The HBCE program now has record attendance at 700 and growing!  It features several areas of interest to the on-site community, and I am told there has been unprecedented interest in the development of employer-sponsored programming in the workplace.  I will be in attendance (and running a workshop), so I will let you know . . .

A lot is happening but a lot more is going to happen in 2011!

Sincerely,

Mike La Penna
