Greetings!
With the passage of the healthcare reform act, there may be some wrinkles for those of you with on-site clinics and employees who have health savings accounts. You may want to check with your legal counsel as there may be some issue with providing anything other than preventive care to those employees at no cost. Just a heads up. |
Florida Governmental Units into On-site Clinics
Several Florida governmental units (school systems, counties, etc.) have developed on-site clinics for their employees and dependents. However, thus far the focus seems to be on urgent care type services, not a true "medical home" model. Even these limited service units seem to be producing savings, however, and may be a means to introduce the concept to the "powers that be" and the employees before taking the plunge for the full scope of services other employers have opted for and found to be highly successful. In Florida, on the Gulf Coast, Charlotte County Public Schools has a clinic in unused classrooms operated by Healthstat, and they apparently plan to open more of these in other school locations in the future.
Bob Goodman, manager of health benefits for Manatee County, indicated in an interview that a key to long-term success and higher return on investment is incorporating wellness programs into the clinic model as well. To see what is happening in Florida, follow this link. |
Purchasing High Performance
We recently found another newsletter in our endless search for information for all of us in the on-site clinic industry (providers, employers, vendors - yes, all of us). This one is entitled Purchasing High Performance and had its third issue published just last week (it is a quarterly publication).
In that issue there are a couple of interesting articles, one - "Is an On-Site Clinic Right for Your Firm?" goes through many of the issues surrounding on-site clinic development analysis and describes one operated by Take Care Health for Glatfelter Paper Company. This clinic in particular is operated for 1,400 employees and their dependents. The article describes the incentives they use and how to measure ROI.
A second feature article in this most recent issue of the newsletter is called, "Can You Get Coordinated, Patient-Centered Care from a Team of Vendors?" Based on an interview with two large employers, the article gives you five tips for getting those results from your "vendors" (physicians, hospitals, etc., you know them). These tips, we think, apply equally well to the employer who is dealing with the typical insurance benefits for its employees and those creating and maintaining on-site services. Anyway, we think it's worth reading the articles. |

Well, of interest in the news today is the fact that Peter Miller is leaving Take Care Health Systems. A real mover in retail healthcare development, Miller's responsibilities will be assumed by Peter Hotz, a divisional VP for Walgreens. The article we saw said that this would happen by the end of May and that he would be "pursuing a new entrepreneurial venture." Who knows what that will be? Mr. Miller has accomplished a great deal in his career already, and I say, "stay tuned for further developments."
Sincerely,
