MSN Weekly Entertainment Notes

OUT 'n abOUT This Week
Greetings!   (Notice - had internet problems or this would have been sent on Sunday!!)

If you missed our Fall Picnic, you missed really good food and friendship.  There were 29 MSN members and guests in attendence.  The event was held at the Christopher Columbus Park on Silverbell Rd.  There  was plenty of food and soft drinks available and we thank everyone that contributed in any way to the success of the event.

As soon as I can, I will be posting all the picnic pictures on both the Yahoo and the FaceBook pages -- they were taken by Davis, Joseph and Bill -- thanks much guys.

Speaking of picnics, our next one, the Annual Thanksgiving Picnic is to be held on November 19th.  We are in need of hosts for this event, if interested, please let Davis or myself know.  Of course there is always plenty of help, but we need a chief coordinator(s) for being sure we are coordinated!!  (Like keeping a updated list of who will do what and bring what for the picnic.)

I also need to remind all to make note on your calendar that our November Monthly Pot Luck will NOT BE HELD ON THE FIRST SATURDAY IN NOVEMBER -- the Church will be holding their annual rummage sale that weekend.  So, our Monthly Pot Luck will be the 2nd Saturday in November (the 12th.)

Sincerely,

Richard Hannay, a mining engineer on holiday from the African colonies, finds London socialite life terribly dull. Yet it's more then he bargained for when secret agent, Scudder, bursts into his room and entrusts him a coded notebook with map, concerning the impending start of World War I.

I first saw this lavish BBC production on PBS and liked it so much I ordered it. Instead of Hitchcock's shadows, we have the lush colors of the English countryside and a handsome hero. Come and enjoy.

Casey Affleck grins like a death's head with the flesh reattached in this noir thriller from British director Michael Winterbottom, which is sickeningly violent but undoubtedly well made. It has been widely condemned for the scenes in which women are brutally assaulted and for many, this film will be just hardcore misogynist hate-porn with a fancy wrapper, and those who admire it, or tolerate it, are merely the women-haters' useful idiots. My own view is that this is a seriously intentioned movie, which addresses and confronts the question of male hate and male violence in the form of a nightmare. Of this, more in a moment.

What's so frightening about Casey Affleck? You'll never look at Ben's cute little brother quite the same way...

See Fox Theater scheduleby Joseph Keller

This is just an FYI note.

Yesterday morning I was perusing the Fox Theater site to see who would be appearing in the next few months: Blues Brothers Revue, Don McLean, Judy Collins, Aaron Neville and others.

If you are interested in live performance, maybe one or more of these upcoming events will be 'right up your alley'.  Check the site for more information.

The Science of Sexual Orientation

Hi MSN Members,

I'm writing to let you know about a recent book by the "gay-brain" scientist, Simon LeVay. It's title is "Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation." It finally puts to rest the old "chosen lifestyle" theory of homosexuality which has done our community so much harm.

Dr. LeVay has spoken at quite a few PFLAG chapters over the years. It would be great if you could let your membership know about this book, or post a link to it on your Facebook wall.

Here's a link to the page which has more information about it:

Thanks and best wishes

Mike

P.S  Please put this link for Simon's LeVay book on your facebook wall , so all your friends can see it. In case they want to buy it.

Pheeling  Philanthropic ? - Phor the remainder of October - why not stop by the Pastiche on North Campbell Avenue just South of Ft. Lowell.

Pistache

Pastiche Modern Eatery's
Philanthropy with Phlavor
is back for the month of October!

PASTICHE WILL DONATE  5% OF SALES TO THE CHARITY OF

YOUR CHOICE IN OCTOBER.

TREAT YOURSELF WHILE TREATING OTHERS!

YOU GET TO DECIDE WHERE THE MONEY
 WILL GO!

This is how it works: Each June and October, Pastiche's customers receive a simple ballot with their check when they come in and dine, or get take-out food. They are asked to designate the non-profit group of their choice on this ballot. Pastiche then contributes 5% of the customers' checks (not including discounts or sales tax) to the non-profit organization. Patrons may participate as many times as they wish during these two months. The more they "do", the more beneficial to our worthy and hardworking non-profits!

Pastiche has been sponsoring this unique contributions campaign twice a year since June 2000. Philanthropy With Phlavor has been an extremely successful and popular fundraising activity for Tucson non-profits, with over $60,000.00 being given to date.

Some of the big "winners" are Community Food Bank of Tucson & Pima County, Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Casa de los Nios, Beowulf Alley Theatre, Arizona Cancer Center, Cancer Society - Tucson Office, Arizona Cancer Center, Hermitage Cat Shelter, Youth On Their Own, Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Primavera Foundation, and
Wingspan.
