MSN MAY EVENTS

It's almost summer guys, so let's enjoy what "spring" we have left.  May brings all our usual events, plus two more of Bill and Darrin's Tuesday Night Movies before they head back to "cool" country for the summer; a visit to Tucson's Franklin Car Museum hosted by Ken & Ike and  two "Old Time Radio" stage performances scheduled in downtown Tucson - Thom Goodrich, hosting.  Come participate in all events with your friends, with your MSN family!

Monthly Pot Luck

Our pot luck theme this month is Fiesta and we have something new.  Ike and Ken (also hosts of the Franklin Car Museum tour) will guest host the pot luck.  We always have lots of goodies, and we're working to promote more personal interaction.  Bring your favorite  dish to share (plan on serving at least 8 out of your dish) and join us on Saturday, May 7that 7P at the Casas Adobes Congregational Church.

If you need information or directions, please contact Lee and Merlin at 207-5336 or Ken and Ike at 207-6264.

Tuesday Night Movies

We have two movies in May, both gay-themed and relatively recent.

I saw "Wilde" (1997) in its first run at the Loft and I was blown away.  Everyone knows the name of Oscar Wilde but how many know the details of his life?  This film presents Wilde as a bit too self confident, sure his fame and wit would protect him from the laws and the morals of his day.  Stephen Fry stars as Oscar Wilde and a young, very cute Jude Law plays Lord Alfred Douglas in this exploration of Wilde as wit and none too subtle lover of young men.

"Wilde" will be hosted by Bill and Darrin on May 10th at 7PM.  Please call 396-9295 to attend.

"The History Boys" is a Tony award winning play brought to the screen with the original cast, but it never feels like a filmed play.  This marvelous film presents young men finding themselves as they prepare for adulthood.  This is not to be missed.

"The History Boys" will also be hosted by Bill and Darrin on May 24th at 7PM.  Please call 396-9295 to attend.

This is the final movie Bill and Darrin will host this year.  If you would like to host the Tuesday Night Movie to continue until they return next January, we need volunteers.  DVDs are available to borrow or rent, but we need hosts with large rooms and large TVs.  Movies are shown every other Tuesday.  To volunteer, contact your MSN board ([email protected]) or MSN Communications Director Davis Palmer ([email protected]).

Franklin Car Museum Tour, May 14th

Each month, MSN tries to find and sponsor new activities.  In April, we had our second annual spring picnic and had a very good turnout (26 members and quests).  This month we offer something new and different, Tucson's answer to the Henry Ford Museum.

Discover one of Tucson's most interesting museums and cultural treasurers! From 1902 to 1934 the Franklin Automobile Company built
America's only truly successful gasoline powered motor car incorporating a direct air-cooled engine.

Take a tour through this center of Franklin history and view the incredible legacy of its Tucson's founder and restorer, Tom Hubbard. The Museum displays 23 Franklins dating from 1908 to 1934.  The collection is supplemented by a rare slice of ARIZONA history, including prehistoric Indian artifacts, artwork, furniture, and a classic example of Southwest adobe architecture, the historic Peters House.

Admission is only $5.00
The address is 3420 N Vine.
Directions: From Prince and Campbell go 3 blocks west on Prince, turn South onto Vine to address, at the corner of Kleindale.

PLEASE CALL KEN COOPER TO RSVP AT 520-207-6264 AS WE NEED TO HAVE A RESERVATION FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ATTENDING!

Sunday Night Dinner OUT

Tom Forester is taking a break, so Davis will again host Sunday dinners.  I've scheduled one brand new place-Mays Counter Chicken and Waffles-one of our most successful lunch spots-Brush Fire Barbecue-and three old favorites.  Turnout for Sunday dinners has increased this year, so come one and all.  For any questions, call Davis at his message phone (325-4754) or send an e-mail to [email protected].

 Other MSN Events

In addition to all the above, MSN offers Charades, Bowling, Pinochle, Scrabble and a gay reading group.  Keep busy this month and every month with your MSN!   If you would care to host any activity or event, please contact either Davis Palmer or Thom  Goodrich so we can help you with "advertising and scheduling."

Tuesday Movie "Spirited Away" (2001) Bill & Darrin 396-9295

www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/

"Chihiro and her family are on their way to their new house in the suburbs when her father decides to take a shortcut along a lonely-looking dirt road. After getting out of the car and walking along a path for a while, they discover an open-air restaurant filled with food but with no workers or customers present. Mom and Dad don't hesitate to sit down and dig in, but Chihiro senses danger and refuses. As night falls, she is terrified to see the area fill with faceless spirits, but when she runs to find her parents, she discovers that they have been turned into pigs. She is found by a mysterious boy named Haku, who promises to help her. He gets her a job working in a nearby building, which turns out to be a bathhouse for the thousands of Japan's gods and spirits. Though the work is hard and the people strange, she does as well as she can. Her parents, however, are still waiting in the hotel's stockyard..."

This is one of the most dazzlingly beautiful films ever made, full or surreal surprises and brilliant colors. This is not to be missed.

May 1Sun Soul Food Finally Comes to Tucson!

Located next to Casa Video, Mays Counter is a well executed cross between a neighborhood pub and a soul food spot, "a modern diner," one of the backers calls it. Instantly popular with college kids and families alike, Mays gives you lots of food for a modest price. If you want to eat healthy, this isn't for you, but if you want to enjoy real Southern soul food, Mays counter comes highly recommended!
