TheTuesday Night Movies
Not so many years ago, Matt Damon and Jude Law starred in a major film adaptation of "The Talented Mr. Ripley," one of lesbian suspense author Patricia Highsmith's best books. At the time, many critics compared the film and the book. The film failed to follow the book, a problem Highsmith often experienced, but the Damon/Law film was not the first film version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
On November 16th, MSN presents the original film version of the book, the 1960 French film "Purple Noon." Daring for thetime, this film isn't true to Highsmith's work either, but it is a dazzling thriller too seldom seen. Highsmith's Ripley is the ultimate con man, a talented mimic, moocher, forger, and criminal improviser, but there is much, much more to Tom Ripley.
Jim will host this film in his home at 7P. Please call 318-0676 to attend.

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving (November 30th), the last day of November, is perfect for our first true holiday film, John Frankenheimer's "Reindeer Games." Rudy and Nick are cellmates about to be paroled. Rudy just wants to go home and have a hot chocolate but Nick has been corresponding with a woman he's never met and dreams of their meeting. When Nick is killed, Rudy assumes his identity, meets the woman, but is drawn into her brother's plan for a casino robbery. Doesn't sound like a Christmas movie? Ah, but it is, snow and tinsel everywhere and a young, bery cute Ben Affleck. Released pre-Christmas, I gave the DVD to myself as a Christmas Present. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Joseph and Larry will host this film in their home at 7P. Please call 505-6560 to attend. |
Tuesday Late Lunches
Our Tuesday Late Lunches alternate with movie nights so MSN always has a Tuesday event. This month, we have two.
On November 9th at 2P, we eat at Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a small chain which opened its first Tucson location less than a month ago in the Albertson's lot on Campbell and Glenn. It has been mobbed every time I've passed, but late lunches usually miss crowds.
Why are we going to a hamburger joint? Five Guys was the subject of a feature on NPR. Founded by...five guys, the restaurant is known for high quality fresh food made to order. This isn't McDonalds's. Five Guys was suggested by an MSN member, so join us and see if they live up to the hype.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On November 23rd, two days before Thanksgiving, we return to Sabor Tropical on Grant near Campbell. This is a Colombian restaurant and was one of our first Tuesday lunch spots. The food is exotic and tasty. This is no ordinary dining experience. |
MSN Thanksgiving Picnic
It has been at least two years since MSN hosted a Thanksgiving picnic, so join us the Saturday before Thanksgiving -- November 20th -- for fun, food and friendship at Himmel Park.
This is not a Thanksgiving dinner but a real picnic. MSN will supply burgers, dogs, buns, potato salad, and anything else we happen to think of, including plates, cups, and drinks. This is not a pot luck, BUT feel free to bring side dishes, come for an old fashioned outing in -- hopefully -- the last of fall's sunny weather. |
MSN Thanksgiving Dinner and Gathering
Once again we return to one of our favorite locations, the Clubhouse at Far Horizons East. From 5-9:30P on Thanksgiving Day, come and share a meal, some games and maybe a movie with MSN friends.
While the details have not yet been completely ironed out, this will be a partial pot luck. I guarantee we will have turkey and dressing--even if I have to make it myself. (Thom Goodrich is donating at 2 turkeys for this dinner.) Bring your favorite Thanksgiving sides and share your holiday with MSN.
Please contact Alan at 603-5276 to attend.
