MSN OCTOBER EVENTS

By Davis Palmer

October may be our busiest month yet!

We have planned a special fall picnic, a Halloween party, and a suspense film every Tuesday. There are just too many films in this genre to narrow it down to two, so I have scheduled four films from very different eras.  BUT - before we get to those - don't forget -

  Monthly Pot Luck

October begins with the monthly pot luck at Casas Adobes Church on the first Saturday, October 2nd, at 7PM. Bring a dish to share and come to our biggest monthly gathering to celebrate the harvest and the start of the Halloween season.

If you need information or directions, please contact Lee and Merlin at 207-5336 or leave a message for Davis at 325-4754 or by email at wilcoxgay@gmail.com.

Tuesday Night Movies

On October 8th, the film will be the original wax museum movie, "The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933)." It's the same plot as the more famous "House of Wax," but instead of 3D, the gimmick here is Technicolor-two-strip Technicolor.

What is two-strip Technicolor? It is not natural color-far from it. It uses two colors, red and green, rather than the three used in "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz" a mere six years later. Few films were shot in two-strip Technicolor and you'll know why after about three minutes.

But I'm not showing "Mystery of the Wax Museum" for the Technicolor, though I'm enough of a film geek to enjoy it. My father saw it when it was released and called it the first color horror film. I'm not sure he was right, but it is well plotted and well acted, both a very scary movie and Art Deco eye candy. Enjoy one of the first color horror films as it looked in 1933.

Joseph and Larry will host this film in their home. Please call 505-6560 to attend.

On October 12th, the film will be "The White Ribbon (2009)." I first saw this at The Loft and was thoroughly blown away. Shot in sumptuous black and white, it isn't really a horror film but it is very unsettling. In a small German town in the early teens-right before The Great War-things begin to go terribly wrong. Is it the children? Is it their teacher, their pastor, the minor nobility to whom all must defer? As you watch, a way of life unchanged for centuries begins to disintegrate.

Beautiful, moving, unnerving-I can't say enough about this film. It is one of the best pictures I've seen this year. Every lover of film should see this.

Jim will host this film in his home. Please call 318-0676 to attend.

It wasn't that long ago we screened "Shadow of the Vampire," a fictionalized account of the filming of Murnau's classic "Nosferatu" (1922). On October 19th, come and see the original film.

"Nosferatu" was not the first horror film, but it set the style for all horror films to come...and the world nearly lost it. Murnau, one of history's greatest directors, thought Bram Stoker's widow wanted too much for the rights to Dracula, so he changed the names and location and shot it without her agreement. She sued and the court ordered the negative and all prints destroyed. Fortunately, a few copies escaped the fire.

"Nosferatu" is not Bela Lugosi's Dracula. Murnau's vampire is hideous rather than refined. He would be appalled by the beautiful vampires of Twilight and True Blood. This is the vampire Bram Stoker described in the novel which launched the vampire as a literary character. Come and see why the original is still the best.

Joseph and Larry will host this film in their home. Please call 505-6560 to attend.

The final film of October's Tuesday night series is "The Mummy" (1932) on October 26th.

Boris Karloff may be best remembered as the monster in "Frankenstein"-a part Lugosi turned down-but the monster, though touchingly human, was buried under tons of makeup. Here, Karloff is a man, a very old man, a living mummy, but here he gets to act as a human being.

I first saw this film on Chiller Theater as a kid and bought a 15 minute silent edition of it in 8mm as a college student. Is it a great film? Probably not, but it is definitely one of the best films of Universal's first cycle of horror and not to be missed.

Jim will host this film in his home. Please call 318-0676 to attend.

  Tuesday Late Lunches

Though the Tuesday Late Lunches were designed to alternate with the movies, we will twice have both in October.

Join MSN on October 5th at 2PM at Opa, 2990 N Campbell.

I have scheduled Sunday dinner here twice, but it is far too busy Sunday evenings. This was an Oasis favorite. The food is Greek and abundant. Service is friendly and prices are reasonable. Come and enjoy.

Please contact Davis to attend. Leave a message at 325-4754 or by email at wilcoxgay@gmail.com.

Join MSN on October 19th at 2PM at the Broadway Café, 3330 E Broadway.

Broadway Café is styled like a Fifties diner with the food I remember as a kid, meatloaf, burgers, fries, and malts. I ate there recently and found the food to be as I remembered it, abundant and fresh. Come and step back into the past.

Please contact Davis to attend. Leave a message at 325-4754 or by email at wilcoxgay@gmail.com.

  MSN Fall Picnic

Last April, we sponsored a potluck picnic at Agua Caliente Park at 12325 E Roger Rd, which is out of town off Tanque Verde.

The park is small but beautiful with a pond and palm trees. Pleasant and shady, we had a wonderful time last April, so we're doing it again. Join us on Saturday, October 16th at noon for food and fun. Bring your camera-many come to this park to paint the scenery. This is a natural oasis.

Please bring a dish or beverage to share as well as your own plates, cups, and silverware.

Please contact Lee and Merlin at 207-5336 to attend.

You may also contact Davis at wilcoxgay@gmail.com or leave a message at 325-4754.

MSN Halloween Party

We return to our original movie site, the clubhouse at Far Horizons East at 7570 E Speedway for our first annual Halloween party. Come in costume-or not-for food fun and a screening of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (1960).

The party runs from 6-9:30PM. We have not yet decided if this will be pot luck style or if the club will furnish the main dish, so wait for an announcement but keep the evening free and plan to attend.

Please contact Alan at 603-5276 to attend.

("Tucson Pops trims fall series to 2 concerts to cut expenses"
by Cathalena E. Burch, AZ Daily Star.

Fans of the Tucson Pops Orchestra's Mucsic Under the Stars series will have fewer opportunities to catch a concert this fall.  The orchestra is presenting only two concerts -- on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3 -- instead of four.  The dramatically streamlined season is part of the orchestra's strategy to stay afloat amid diminished corporate gifts, sponsorships and city funding, which this year amounted to $9,000 -- a third of what the orchestra received just last year. ......The Pops Orchestra has traditionally performed 10 concerts a year at Reid Park's DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center -- six in its spring series and four in the fall.  David Sitton ((longtime president of the orchestra's board of directors)) said it costs the orchestra $11,000 for each performance, which covers production expenses such as sheet-music rentals and the musicians' salaries.  Most of the orchestra is from the ranks of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. ......losing the city funding and several large corporate sponsors, including Long Reality ...... at one time Long kicked in betwen $10 and $15,000 a year to the orchestra.  The orchestra also was successful in soliciting audience donations.  At each concert, volunteers literally pass a basket.  "We raised $46,000 to fund the spring.  That ain't bad," Sitton said.)

The second and final Fall Music Under the Stars takes place at the Reid Park's Demeester Amphitheater at 7PM on Sunday, October 3rd. This will be your last chance to hear the Tucson Pops until spring, so enjoy.

Please call Vaughn at 834-9980 to attend.
