Greetings!
Thank goodness, the daily three digit temperatures are going away -- FINALLY!!!!!
Our scheduled activities, not only in the M.S.N., but just about all other GLBT and GLBT friendly groups and business' will be kicking events into high gear in the next couple of months as the "snow birds" return to the Old Pueblo to enjoy the beautiful fall, winter, spring season. Those of us fortunate enough to live here get to enjoy an almost ideal weather climate year round. We seldom have any of mother natures nasty weather other than the few months of heat and high humidity. Thank goodness the hurricanes, tornados, major floods, earth quakes and all of those adverse mother nature events avoid most of our great State.
Our September and October M.S.N. Events calendars are available in pdf format by clicking on these links:
Speaking of Snow Birds returning -- we have entered a lot of information about our city -- if you have friends or relatives that are planning to visit Tucson in the near future, you might want to forward this eNEWS Info letter to them -- there is a "Forward email" link at the very bottom of this newsletter -- you can click on it and share this with anyone that you know may not be subscribed to our newsletter and you would like to share it with them.
Sincerely,
Thom Goodrich |

Beowulf Alley Opens Their 2010-2011 Season
with Shining City by Conor McPherson (Tucson, AZ) Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 South 6th Avenue, begins the new season with the Tony Award-nominated, Arizona Premiere of Shining City by Conor McPherson. Shining City has been described as a "modern day ghost story about human contact." Set in a therapist's office in Dublin, the play grapples with faith, guilt and redemption, underscoring the failures of language to communicate the truth. A middle-aged man, John, who has recently seen the ghost of his deceased wife seeks professional help from a priest-turned-therapist, Ian. The travails of the guilt-ridden John offer more than professional fodder for Ian and the routine visits become a gripping struggle to survive. I was blown away...Conor McPherson's ... play is haunting, inspired and glorious. - NY Times Review One of Ireland's most prominent contemporary playwrights, Conor McPherson has won overwhelming acclaim for his insightful, meditative plays, which focus with a quiet, unblinking eye on the big themes: the crisis of modern masculinity, spirituality, frailty, solitude and - of course - death. In a review of his twice Tony award-nominated 2004 play Shining City, the Daily Telegraph called McPherson, the finest dramatist of his generation. Awards for his theatre work include the Laurence Olivier Award, Evening Standard Award, Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award, George Devine Award, Meyer-Whitworth Award and the Stewart Parker Award. Susan Arnold, Director, works in theatre and film as an actor, director, writer and producer. Her directorial credits include Last of the Boys, Dinner with Friends, and Stones in His Pockets with Beowulf Alley, where she contributes to the Artistic Development Committee. Susan served as Artistic Director for the Attic Theatre in Detroit, MI and is the recipient of several theatre excellence awards for acting and directing. She has appeared on stage in a number of productions including most recently Big 8 in Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage Beowulf Alley Theatre, Cleopatra in Immortal Longings and Claire in the production of The Maids, both at The Rogue Theatre. She is a member of Screen Actors' Guild and Actors' Equity Association and currently serves as Artistic Director for C.A.S.T. Clean and Sober Theatre in Tucson. The cast of Shining City includes Lucas Gonzales, David Greenwood, Laura Lippman and Jared Stokes. Reservations are encouraged. We recommend this play for 13 years and older. Run Time: 90 minutes with no intermission Performances Days, Dates: Friday, September 10 (Preview); Saturday, September 11 (Opening Night with reception to follow); This is also Downtown 2nd Saturdays so arrive and park early for a little fun before and after curtain. Sunday, September 12 (post-show discussion, Dialogues with...); Thursdays through Sundays, September 16-September 26. __________________________________________________________
Tucson Botanical Gardens Tucson, AZ The Tucson Botanical Gardens will hold its annual Pointless Plant Sale, Friday, September 24, noon - 6 p.m. and Saturday, September 25, from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Experience a new kind of desert plant sale that features a huge variety of native desert plants that grow without spines or thorns. Pointless plants don't poke, prick or puncture people. Different growers from the area will showcase and sell finger-friendly cacti, succulents, landscape plants and other non-threatening vegetation. Pointless pottery and refreshments will also be on sale. Admission to the plant sale is free. Desert vegetation is expected to be spiny, thorny and vicious. Water is scarce, so every drop should be defended by spikes - or so the common wisdom goes. But many desert-growing or arid-adapted plants exist without spines. You may overlook them as their spiny cohorts are tapping you on the shoulder (or the ankle). Some spineless plants specialize in being overlooked. Living stones and Living rock cacti are defenseless plants with skins resembling the rocks in their habitat. Individual species are often adapted to specific rock types. Other plants, such as Baby's toes, certain cacti, and many haworthias, do not look much like rocks but in the wild grow buried in the soil with just their tops showing in the sunlight. A few spineless plants live sheltered lives on sheer cliffs or high ledges out of reach of most predators. Such is the home of the smooth-leaved Octopus agave and Squid agave, both from steep cliffs in parts of Mexico. Some spineless plants are outright mutations. Be they natural mutations or the result of selective cultivation, they are not characteristic of the typical species. The remarkable Totem pole cactus is an example of a natural mutation which grows in the wild in Baja California. __________________________________________________________ TUCSON PRIDE ANNOUNCES ENTERTAINMENT LINE-UP FOR PRIDE ON PARADE AND PRIDE IN THE DESERT 2010

About Tucson
University of Arizona U of A is located in Tucson. The University of Arizona offers more than 150 Bachelor and degree programs, 200 master, doctoral and specialist degree programs.
_______________________
Tucson has been continuously settled for over 12,000 years. It celebrates a diversity of cultures, architecture, and peoples. Yet, it is one of the "Mega-Trend" cities of the 21st Century: the Optics Valley, premier health services center for the Southwest, the astronomy center of the world, home of a premier research institution - University of Arizona, and a tourism destination.
Tucson, too SAHN or TOO sahn, is one of the oldest towns in the United States. Tucson was orginally an Indian village called Stook-zone, meaning water at the foot of black mountain. Hugo O'Conor established the Tucson Presidio in 1775. August 20th, 1775 is considered Tucson's birthday. Spanish settlers arrived in the area in 1776. Tucson officially became part of the United States with the Gadsden Purchase of 1854. Tucson served as capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877.
Tucson boasts the best of both worlds...the progress and innovation of a metropolitan community and the friendly, caring atmosphere of a small town. Tucson's rich cultural heritage centers around a unique blend of Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American influences. Blessed with the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert and an unsurpassed climate of 360 sunny days a year, Tucsonans embrace a rare lifestyle and are committed to preserving that quality of life.
Tucson's climate varies from the 2400 foot desert basin to the 9100 foot forests of the Santa Catalina mountains. The City's dry desert air and winter sunshine make it a popular health and winter resort. The City is home to the University of Arizona and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The City's industries include electronics and missile production. Tucson is the seat of Pima County and has a Council-Manager form of government.
The Tucson metropolitan area supports over 750,000 residents. As metropolitan Tucson continues to grow by nearly 2,000 new residents each month, the challenge of meeting citizen expectations also increases.
Getting to Tucson
is easyTucson is served by 11 airlines with non-stop service to 14 cities and connections to over 121 destinations. Amtrak passenger service and major bus lines give you non-flying options. For drivers, Tucson is on Interstate 10, the main highway between California and Florida.
Once in Tucson, it is easy to get where you need to go. In the city, call SunTran, the public bus system at 792-9222 for route maps and schedules. In the downtown area, catch a free ride on the Tucson Inner City Express Transit (T.I.C.E.T.). Of course, there are many major car rental agencies and taxi companies.
What is the population of Metropolitan Tucson?
When it was founded in 1775, Tucson's population was just over 3,000. By 1920, the population had grown to 20,292. Today, over 1,000,000 people call Tucson home.
How hot does it get?
The highest temperature ever recorded was 117 degrees Fahrenheit on June 26, 1990. The annual average is 82 degrees Fahrenheit/28 degrees Celsius for the high temperature, and 55 degrees Fahrenheit/13 degrees Celsius for the low temperature. Tucson's mild climate is legendary.
How far away is Phoenix, Arizona, and how long is the drive? Is there a shuttle service between Tucson and Phoenix?
The distance between Tucson and Phoenix is roughly 100 miles. The drive via Interstate 10 at the posted 75-mile-an-hour speed limit is a little under two hours. Arizona Shuttle Service is Arizona's largest statewide shuttle service between Tucson and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. View the chart below for driving distances to other popular Arizona destinations.
