DON'T MISS MSN'S NEWEST ACTIVITIES! |
Greetings!
Movie nights every other Tuesday at the clubhouse at Far Horizons East have been under attended a damn shame as we have done several memorable movies, but if you have any interest in the history of cinema, you cannot afford to miss our next two movies!
The title of Shadow of the Vampire (2001) suggests a simple horror film, but don't be fooled by the title.
"John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe star in a riveting suspense thriller about an obsessive director so consumed with making the most realistic vampire movie ever he's willing to sacrifice everything-and everyone-to achieve his vision."
This is the almost true tale of (gay) director F. W. Murnau's (Malkovich) filming of Nosferatu (1922), an unauthorized version of Bram Stoker's "Dracula." The conceit of the film? The actor, Max Schreck (Dafoe) is so little known in film history, writer Steven Katz asks, "What if Schreck was a real vampire?"
This is an actor's film. This is a film historian's film. Director E. Elias Merhige lovingly recreates several scenes from Murnau's film, recreates them so carefully the scenes and the settings match the 1922 original.
If you ever wondered how silent films were made; if you ever wondered how a great director (and Murnau was one of the greatest, his premature death a tragedy) worked; if you ever wanted to see two of the greatest actors of our era play off each other, you must see this film.
Shadow of the Vampire was the last film I saw in a theater before my life-changing surgery in 2001, and I pre-ordered the DVD as soon as I got out of the hospital. It is that good.
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE PLAYS AT THE FAR HORIZONS EAST CLUBHOUSE AT 7PM, TUESDAY, JUNE 29TH. CONTACT DAVIS 325-4754 (wilcoxgay@gmail.com) OR ALAN 603-5726 (C) or 393-8603 (H).
Most people alive today have never seen a silent film in a theater. Save for TCM, silent films have vanished from television and, while long available in 8mm, on VHS, and DVD, prints are often bad. Most silent films are in the public domain and anyone can sell a commercial print, good or bad.
If you know anything about silent film at all, you will have heard of Lon Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera. Released in 1925, it offers Lon Chaney as the hideous skull-like phantom, lush sets (some still in use), and a cast of thousands. Though shot in black and white, it features an entire scene in two-strip Technicolor-you will be surprised-and a hand tinted scene where only one object is in color.
There were so many edits to The Phantom of the Opera, it is difficult if not impossible to find a definitive version, but in 2003, Milestone Film and Video and Image Entertainment produced an ultimate edition of the film which featured several restored versions. Our presentation comes from this set.

4th of July Weekend
Don't forget our Monthly Pot Luck & Social at 7PM, this coming Saturday, July 3rd. It will be a patriotic theme - held at the Casas Adobis Congregational Church Hall on N. Oracle -- details -- contact Merlin 207-5336. ****************** The Sunday Dinner Out for July 4th has been replaced by Scott Harrington's July 4th Fireworks Viewing Party.
Hi Guys, Fireworks anyone??
Scott Harrington here. I've decided to host a 4th of July event at the base of A-Mountain and you're invited!
I have reserved rooms 112 and 113 at the Super 8 Motel so that attendees can watch the Tucson City fireworks display scheduled for 21:15 hrs (9:15pm). I've reserved two rooms because I'm also inviting members of Tucson Mensa, another organization to which I belong. I will plan on opening the rooms at 5pm. I
've heard it through the grapevine that the Bears of the Old Pueblo will also be there. I cannot afford to provide refreshments at this time, but can provide a medium-sized ice chest with ice. Anyone who wants to bring food or drink to share feel free. I will also gratefully accept donations to cover the room but both are completely optional.
NO alcoholic beverages please.
There are two restaurants within walking distance: Waffle House (breakfast, burgers, chicken breast sandwiches and salads, etc.) and The Kettle (similar to Dennys).
WARNING: I've been coming to this location for several years now and this location FILLS UP FAST. I suggest that you consider arriving early and/or carpooling to insure convenient parking. Also, bring your own outdoor chair if you don't want to stand--the smaller the better as sidewalk space is at a premium and chairs are not allowed in the motel driveway/parking lot.
The show lasts about 45-60 minutes.
The location for the 4th of July event is Super 8 Motel at 22nd Street and I-10. My cell phone number is 520-247-0277 - (please call for more info.)
Hope to see you there. Scott Harrington 8-) Scott is paying for the rooms so donations are welcomed. ********************** |
