Greetings!

Pride Week 2010
With Summer just around the corner, my thoughts go back to that time as a child, anticipating the joy of release from school.  Just knowing that we were not going to be on a schedule or that we had to go to school was enough to get me out of bed and raring to go!   May was all about the thrill of anticipation: soon, no more homework, no more studying for tests, just long summer days running around outside, riding bikes, playing with my friends - the anticipation of summer was as good as summer itself!
Had I known that summer vacation was a childhood phenomenon and that this would all come to a screeching halt as an adult, I would have certainly relished that time more intensely.

There are all kinds of worthwhile summer events coming up that should create lasting memories.

Have a great month of June - better yet a super summer!

 Star Wars Opens

Star Wars

On May 25th, 1977, Memorial Day weekend opens with an intergalactic bang as the first of George Lucas' blockbuster Star Wars movies hits American theaters.

The incredible success of Star Wars--seven Oscars, $461 million in U.S. ticket sales and a gross of close to $800 million worldwide--began with an extensive, coordinated marketing push by Lucas and his studio, 20th Century Fox, months before the movie's release date. "It wasn't like a movie opening," actress Carrie Fisher, who played rebel leader Princess Leia, later told Time magazine. "It was like an earthquake." Beginning with--in Fisher's words--"a new order of geeks, enthusiastic young people with sleeping bags," the anticipation of a revolutionary movie-watching experience spread like wildfire, causing long lines in front of movie theaters across the country and around the world.
With its groundbreaking special effects, Star Wars leaped off screens and immersed audiences in "a galaxy far, far away." By now everyone knows the story, which followed the baby-faced Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as he enlisted a team of allies--including hunky Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and the robots C3PO and R2D2--on his mission to rescue the kidnapped Princess Leia from an Evil Empire governed by Darth Vader. The film made all three of its lead actors overnight stars, turning Fisher into an object of adoration for millions of young male fans and launching Ford's now-legendary career as an action-hero heartthrob.

Star Wars was soon a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon. Over the years it has spawned five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry's worth of comic books, toys, video games and other products. Two big-screen sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983), featured much of the original cast and enjoyed the same success--both critical and commercial--as the first film. In 1999, Lucas stretched back in time for the fourth installment, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, chronologically a prequel to the original movie. Two other prequels, Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005) followed.
The latter Star Wars movies featured a new cast--including Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen--and have generally failed to earn the same amount of critical praise as the first three films. They continue to score at the box office, however, with Revenge of the Sith becoming the top-grossing film of 2005 in the United States and the second worldwide.

Memorial Day
Memorial CandlesMany of us have lost our partners, friends or close relatives all too early in their lives, we think of them everyday.

We have lost fellow members and friends we have known in the Men's Social Network.  Most losses were the result of some medical problem.

I am "building" a Memorial Page to be included in our new web site.

I do not have the information for all of our losses.  I would appreciate any information from our members, current or inactive, to put their losses on our Memorial Page.

The information I will need is:

Deceased Name:
Relationship:
Related to:
M.S.N. Member?:
Date of Birth:
Date of Passing:

With Memorial Day just behind us, we all refresh our memories of our loved ones that have passed so -- please send the information to me at msn.communicator@gmail.com so that we can have a nice memorial page.  You can watch the web site progress by going to:  www.mensocialnetwork.org and "grow" with the web site -- suggestions always welcome -- it is a slow work in progress!!!!

How do you like your iced tea? What I mean is, do you like real brewed iced tea or do you like the stuff from the store, with all the sugar and lemon?

Anyway, June is National Iced Tea Month. I drink more iced tea in the hotter months of July and August, but since June marks the start of summer I guess it's a logical time to have the holiday (holimonth?). AOL Food has some great iced tea ideas, including tips on making the best iced tea, reviews of iced tea, and even an iced tea quiz.

One of the largest complaints that your Steering Committee receives is there are NO EVENTS ON THE EAST SIDE OF TOWN!!!   We are trying to schedule more events on the east side of town and as long as they are well attended, we will continue to TRY and find places and or host on the east side that will offer a variety of events.

In April the Spring Picnic was held at Agua Callente Park way out on East Roger Road.  It was attended by 13 members and guests, everyone enjoyed and look forward to holding on again, possibly in the fall.

Over the years the Sunday Night Dinner OUT has been scheduled all around town -- it use to be on a rotation basis (i.e. one week North, next week South, next week West, then East and Central).   This continues and Davis (325-4754) is always open to suggestions for culinary eating experiences - got a favorite eatery, let Davis know - he is looking for popular places we might enjoy.  He is also going to be looking into Lunches or Early Dinners OUT every other Tuesday since the 2nd largest complaint about activities seems to be "we don't drive at night any more!!!"

Just so no area of town feels left OUT of our activities, we welcome anyone that would like to host any card or board games; pizza parties either in homes or at a favorite pizza hang out joint; hosted home movies on the North West; South West; Central; Ora Valley; Green Valley; or anywhere is always welcome -- if you need help and want to host some event, please contact either Davis @ 325-4754; Lee @ 207-5336 or me - -

Fraternally,
