ECLECTIC CONCERT AT M.C.C.
Merlin Spillers, Organizer |
What follows is a summary of a report in the Wingspan Senior Forum Newsletter about the concert organized by Merlin Spillers and performed at Metropolitan Community Church on Saturday, October 17th - - - -
The music concert was a huge success. Although the audience was somewhat small - around 40 people - $1,000 was raised, all of which went to Wingspan. Proceeds from the concert itself, the raffle and selling goodies came to a grand total of $945. Since I had said to several people that I hoped to raise $1,000 for Wingspan, a generous friend pledged to make up the difference from the proceeds so that goal would be reached.
I was pleased in that when I went to places asking for prizes for the raffle, the people with whom I spoke immediately were than willing to help when they heard that it was a benefit for Wingspan. The gifts were generous, two examples being the invisible Theatre giving $100 worth of tickets to their productions and Trader Joe's giving a huge basket of foods worth over $50. I was honored that State Senator Paula Aboud, who was in the audience, came up and drew the winning tickets.
Since this was successful I am planning to have another such concert, probably in January. I have been told by the heads of MCC, that they will be happy to host another. If anyone knows of a musician who might like to appear in the next concert, please have that person contact me at 207-5336.
This was an eclectic concert. It began with Dorothea Nobile presenting some operatic arias, followed by Pastor Chewee of MCC singing gospel songs. Then a couple who just recently moved to Tucson, Ceil Melton and Han Nguyen, performed. Ceil sings Patsy Cline songs and Han does American Sign Language in music. She has changed this from just signing into a true art form, and it is quite moving to watch her perform. After intermission, folk singers Elyse Levy and Ted Warmbrand each performed. Ted had the audience singing along with him quite a bit. Since neither of these people are members of the LGBT community, it was an especially good feeling to have them perform in this benefit concert. Last but definitely not least, Pastor Knight from MCC sang two Broadway songs.
The audience seemed to love every performer judging from the reponse that each one received. It was an evening of good music and good feelings.

Guest Editorial |

(Note: Many of you may recall Bill Biggins, an active member of our family a couple of years ago. Bill had many medical problems and left the Old Pueblo moving to South Carolina. Bill loves to write, he loves receiving emails from his friends. I have asked Bill if he wouldn't mind me posting some of his emails in a Guest Editorial format, to which he has agreed. Any of his old friends wishing to say Hi to Bill, will find his email address, snail mail info and his newest website info below - - Thanks much Bill)
Sometimes I'm not sleepy.
Man, It's LATE tonight... actually Sunday morning. Rain is steadily falling outside this door I sit against, the sound of drops pelting fallen leaves. Today the yard was carpeted in those yellow leaves, covering the table and four chairs, my van, the drive, the street, the world. A friend called inviting me to lunch then on to a one woman show, a drive to the Pickens Museum... was a dickens in Pickens... a rare event to get out and boy were those leaves brilliant and flashing in the hour's ride: red maples, yellow maples, hickory in red-orange and sour wood in brilliant red, all juxtaposed against a strident green. Trees pushing off old readying the bud. It was like God emptied a boxes of Kiddy Kix cereal over the land while He grooved on steroids, iridescents and LSD. Tomorrow cloudy, the next sunny... nothing stays the same for even a millisecond.
Ah the clocks turn back an hour tomorrow/this evening... Arizona had it right, to hell with daylight savings. Nothing is saved because nothing is lost, though I did loose a tooth once. It never came back.
It seems if you look closely, listen carefully, truly there are no absolutes and-yet nothing is fixed?

Men's Social Network Survey - -
any interest in a Calling Tree Club? |
If you have already replied to an email sent a month or so ago to all members, asking your opinion regarding forming a Calling Tree Club, please disregard this survey. If you have not completed the survey OR have had a change of mind regarding this issue, please click on the link below and follow the instructions.
The main purpose of the club is to verify that we are "alive and well" and to enhance communications between members a bit more than we currently communicate verbally. Getting to know one another by a simple 2 to 3 minute daily phone call. The requirement would be that we call ONE person on the list on a rotation basis daily. If you are going to be out of town for a period of time or just want to be dropped, you can opt out of calling. | |

Thom, Thanks for the The Latest News. I read it all. I am still in Maine, though I hope to return to my home in Green Valley someday soon. I would like to keep in touch. The struggle of consensus and working together as a group of friends is not yours alone. I find the same situation in a Just for Guys group in a nearby city. Discouraging. I think positively and seek the best in all..... Yours,
Aaron Neil 9/11/09
