The recent 2009 M.S.N. Survey Results
 Men's Social Network -Tucson

NOTE: In this section, during the next several months, I would like to publish the results of our 2009 Survey.  We will take a look at many of the comments.  We will try and understand what the numbers reflect.  We are just going to share with all members and allow them to draw their own conculsions.  We as a Steering Committee will take the constructive comments and suggestions and work on improving our services and benefits for being a paid member of Tucsons (even Arizona's and probably the entire Country's) most popular gay men's social organization with activities planned around "non-alcholic" fun times.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This past spring, a new Steering Committee put many hours into trying to come up with a plan to keep the Men's Social Network an active and viable gay community membership organization. We were very close to "shutting it down" due to a lack of participation and difficulty in getting volunteers to host events and work on the Steering Committee.

We also could not continue with our big draw card "The Network News", our monthly snail mailing which was costing us about $130.00 a month in printing and postage.  (Also, our beloved Doug Martin resigned after many years as it's editor and after repeated requests for two years for a volunteer replacement, only Thom Goodrich expressed an interest in temporary editor until someone else volunteers.)

Merlin Spillers, Bruce Babski and Thom Goodrich were the only members remaining on the Steering Committee from the previous year.

Our usual annual life saver has been the Auction. No one wanted to conduct or organize it this year. Our largest expenses which the extra Auction income help cover are (were) the monthly newsletter and the Jerry Curl $1000.00 Scholarship fund.

To make a long story short - Thom and Merlin put out a plea for volunteers for the Steering Committee, they also asked friends for their help on the committee. We are still seeking volunteers to fill seats, but we are up and running with what we do have for now.  (*Introductions coming in future e news.)  Once it appeared that we had found enough to carry on, Bruce decided to "retire" after many years of dedicated service on the committee -- "thank you much Bruce - we luv ya'".

At our first meeting, there was much discussion of what we might do and it was decided that we send a survey to every member and see what they felt could be done to increase interest and involvement.
______________________________

We have received 79 responses as of 6/26/09. Many comments, good and bad. Interesting figures as far as member participation and interests, etc. - - well what the heck - - here is the first of several articles covering the survey results.

Primary reason(s) for joining the M.S.N.?

#1 Meeting new friends = 63;

#2 Monthly Pot Luck Dinners = 42;
#3 Newsletter - Monthly Mailed = 30;
#4 Hosted Card or board games = 22 and
#5 Friend(s) recommended M.S.N. = 22.

Dinner OUT came in with 18 while Hosted Pizza Parties in homes came in with 17.

Meeting "Mr. Right" and the Annual Auction/Pot Luck both tied with 16 each.

The Annual Anniversary Dinner only accounted for 13 just under the 14 for "OTHER" various reasons.

Lunch OUT = 12; Hosted Hikes = 11 and Triangle Tribe accounting for 8.

Everything else was 6 or less.

Overall, how satisfied have you been with the Men's Social Network?

3 = Very Dissatisfied

15 = Somewhat Dissatisfied

11 = Neutral

28 = Somewhat Satisfied

22 = Totally Satisfied

2 = Other

Over all it appears that the majority are Satisfied - - we would like to keep them that way and we would like to change the Neutrals and Dissatisfied members into Satisfied, if at all possible. Of course I am sure we have all heard old sayings like "give 'em a golden chain to hang themselves with and they still will bitch" or what ever that old saying is - LOL!!!

How long have you been a member of the Men's Social Network?

0 = Less than 6 months

4 = 6 months to a year

7 = 1-2 years

21 = 3-5 years

39 = Over 5 years

9 = member since the beginning

Looks like we have a "seasoned" group of members with the majority holding membership for over 5 years.

Here are some suggestions from the survey to help improve the M.S.N.:

"More daytime activities (cards, movies, etc.) and day trips, not just about food."

"It'd be interesting to find out how MSN members entertain themselves - or pusue their interests when they're not attending MSN activities. Perhaps there'd be some new insights or application to be gained."

"I do not attend regular meetings, so somewhat disappointed. People not very friendly. Members do not wear name badges. One member asked me recently one time if I were a new member and I have been there for over 2 years. I'm not gifted to gab so I guess I'm not a memorable person."

"Hosted card games, not consistent on rules of the game of pinochle." "Print out rules different than that of the game played." "Have never gone to pinochle game." "I'm not a social butterfly. Lost my partner of almost 45 years, over 2 years ago. We were very close. I've had a difficult time. Thought I might meet some people for friendship."

The above is just the tip of the ice burg as far as comments and suggestions - - we will continue in the next edition.

In the mean time, check out the article below, read a letter sent to the editor back in December, 2003, just before the Christmas holidays.

 MISCELLANEOUS - -
LABOR DAY WEEKEND; POT LUCK AND DUES
We (the Steering Committee) hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. If you are not doing anything, we hope you attended the Monthly Pot Luck - the theme for September (5th at 7PM) was Corn Harvest Festival.  Attendance was down to 24 but hopefully very soon we will be getting back into the old routine with most vacations and trips out of the way, until next spring/summer.

Snow Birds will be returning before we know it, attendance should be climing once again.

If you would care to renew your annual dues with the Men's Social Network and are not sure when your dues are due -- please call me at 520-908-6160 -- I will be glad to look up your renewal date for you. Annual dues are still the same - - $20.00 for single and $30.00 for couple. Renewal notices are still being mailed out but in the event you have either not received one in a long time or have misplaced it, feel free to call. We have a Post Office Box now in order to receive M.S.N. mail instead of it being mailed to an individuals home.

Once again, have a wonderful relaxing Labor Day.

UPCOMING PRIDE EVENTS IN OCTOBER

Here are pictures from the event last year -- several M.S.N. shots -- they are "protected" and I can't copy them in order to post them on our sites -- if anyone has any shots of last year that we can get copies of, please let me know.
http://www.tucsonpride.org/index.php?option=com_expose--

I regret that I have not had any experience with "working" this annual event (and it looks like if it is Saturday and I'm still employed, another year will pass that I won't beable to help) - so we will need anyone with "experience" to step forward and offer any advice, suggestions, time, and whatever so that we are well represented as we have been in the past.  I am not sure what we have done other than an "M.S.N." info booth?  I don't know who has the M.S.N. banner?  I believe we have had entries in the Parade but am not sure what?

Looks like the Pride On Parade is Friday, Oct 9th (entry fee $26.00 for walking $52.00 for moterized??)

The Pride In The Desert at Reid Park event is Saturday. Oct 10th (exhibitor/vendor booth fee - non profit - $155 which includes 4 passes)

PLEASE -- if anyone can offer any advice, suggestions, time, and whatever for this years event, please contact me as soon as possible.

Thanks much,

Thom

Dear Valued Member,

We apologize if it seems like it is taking forever "LOOKING FORWARD - WITH GREAT PRIDE IN THE PAST" but we slowly are progressing toward what we hope will be an extended family well worth being a member of, now and into the future.

We can never replace Jerry Curl (one of the original founding Fathers of the M.S.N.) We regret that many living founding members and long time members have chosen to drop from our rolls for what ever their reasons. We respect that right but we would very much like to discover their reasons for leaving and possibly work toward regaining their valued comradeship, even if it is only a membership held in memory of Jerry Curl and helping us to continue his ideals for social networking and the Jerry Curl Memorial Scholarship Fund established after his death.

As your M.S.N. President, along with the Steering Committee, we have several goals that we would like to see mature for our members. I feel we currently have an active and concerned Steering Committee that will assist with improvements in membership benefits. (We still have openings on the Steering Committee for active and concerned members to volunteer and have a decisive voice in our planning and development - let me know if you are interested.)

We recently conducted a Membership Survey by mail. We were really pleased with the response. We are still receiving "straggler returns" - as of June 13th we have received 78 responses. There are many comments, good and bad, we are taking them all to heart in the hopes that these represent the true views and opinions of our members. There are several suggestions that we will try to roll into our programs and offerings as we can.

Everyone is feeling the pinch in our current economic conditions. Postage has gone up again. We are trying to keep dues at their current level by going "Green." That is a goal to minimize or eliminate hard copy communications. At this point we are still very dependent on our old time faithful Yahoo Groups for communications. We are looking at several possible Web Site and email or enews formats and once we select what we feel is "user friendly to all," we will present the easiest and best for our community to keep up with our internet media and communications. We fully realize we have members that are not interested in being involved with computers at home and will require media and communications by snail mail or phone. In this vein, we are in need of any members that would care to volunteer and serve on our Media and Communications Subcommittee as editors, formatters, ZIP printers, callers or in any other capacity as needed - please contact me or Davis Palmer, 520-325-4754 for more details.

We recently became a member of the Tucson GLBT Chamber of Commerce. It is our aim to solicit "goodies" from the membership of the Chamber (and other sources) and be able to offer an M.S.N. Membership Benefits package.

We are looking to expand our Membership Directory to include "Clubs" - more details on this in upcoming months.  (More info on the "Clubs" in upcoming editions.)

So far this year we have not held an "Annual Auction" which in the past has been a major fundraiser for us. We are looking at several other options to either replace the auction or improve it. We need a Chairman of the Fundraising sub-committee - - anyone care to step forward?? Let me know.

We are ALIVE and WELL and hope that you will continue your membership and "grow with us as we work toward our sweet 16th year of membership service." Remember, any service or benefit received from membership depends on it's members working together toward improvement and away from stagnation.

Fraternally yours,

Thom Goodrich (520-908-6160)

December 23, 2003

Dear XXX editor,
We received our renewal notice and there was something I wanted to email you personally regarding the renewal of our membership. First of all, I would like to commend you for a recent article you wrote in the monthly newsletter that referenced the 7 Habits by Stephen Covey.

I have been through the 7 Habits training, and apply all of the principals to my life. When necessary I do refresher courses as I feel all 7 Habits keep people centered.

In a later edition of your newsletter, you wrote an article about someone who decided not to renew their membership do to the way they were treated at functions. The person felt that other people wre in clicks, and were not made to feel a part of the social network. Truthfully, I was appalled at your article and how you blamed the individual for not attending enough events, and not putting their foot forward to interact with others.

From the time my partner and I joined MSN, we felt it extremely difficult to meet other people. We went to many of the pot lucks, and when we sat with people they actually got up and left the table to sit with others We ended up meeting a wonderful friend at one MSN event. He stopped attending as he felt the only people who ever interacted with him was my partner and I. We asked three of our other friends to join, one did, and he only attended a handful of events as no one talked with him and his comment was why would I want to go where people are not sociable to newcomers. Two other friends attended at different times and both felt out of place since others did not socialize with them.

My partner and I belong to several non gay organizations and have many close friends here in Tucson The purpose for joining MSN was to have a larger network of gay friends. During the course of the year, we have been caring for a terminally ill parent and when we are able to make it to an activity it is nice to be out and to be able to enjoy the company of others. This was never the case with MSN.

If you truly understood the concept of the 7 Habits you would have asked the members of MSN to reach out to the newcomer, as they are probably uncomfortable being in social situation with people they do not know. People would not get up and move to another table when someone they did not know sat with them. Lastly, the idea of "holding seats" at a pot luck dinner truly does not set the tone of what a pot luck is supposed to be. A pot luck is where people go to meet and socialize. If your holding seats for friends, you should instead just meet them at a restaurant for dinner alone and not attend such a large group.

You started a truly wonderful network for gay men here in Tucson. Hoever, the bast majority of the group are in clicks. There is no difference between the "bar scene" and the MSN when it comes to seeing clicks.

Therefore, at this time we have decided not to renew our membrship. Someday if your group changes it might be fun to join. The concept is fantastic. But it takes all the members to make newcomers feel welcome. For those people who are not able to dedicate time for a lot of events due to work, caring for family members, and other obligations, your organization needs to understand there is life outside the MSN events.
Best regards,
XXXX XXXXXXX

NOTE: We will publish Jerry Curl's reply to this letter in the next edition.
