December 2011: Message from the CEO
SKB at Desk

Samira K. Beckwith

President and CEO

The end of the year and the holiday season is the traditional time to celebrate the gifts and treasures in our lives. We are grateful for the Hope Volunteers, whose service is a very special gift to Hope and the entire community.

This year, you have accomplished so much in your service to others. In January, we began our Tuck-in Program, to ensure that those in our care are comfortable and safe at night. You have made more than 8,000 calls this year, and met more than 1,000 special requests!

Whether you are helping to care for someone, serving in the Hope Honor Guard, working in the office or at a community event, you continue to make life so much better for others.

Hope Volunteers now number more than 1,200. Together, you have served more than 122,000 hours in 2011.

Those numbers are quite impressive, but most important is the quality, love and thoughtfulness that you put in to your work.

Thank you for all that you do, and best wishes in the New Year!

Infection Control

Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) is an infection that damages the large intestine, resulting in diarrhea.

Who is affected by C Diff? The elderly and people with multiple medical issues are the most likely to be affected by C Diff, but any one of us can acquire and spread this infection.

How do you get C Diff? This bacterium is found in feces. Healthcare workers can spread bacteria from one patient to another by direct hand contact.

Preventing C Diff Handwashing is the key to preventing infection. C Diff can live on surfaces for months, so always be extra cautious when working with a patient that has a C Diff infection. If you have any questions about visiting patients with C Diff, please ask your volunteer specialist.

A Volunteer Story

In January, volunteer specialist David Kowalski asked if Lisa would be interested in visiting Edwin, a 9 year old boy, on a regular basis. She said yes immediately. On the initial meeting, Edwin was shy and didn't say a word. But when Lisa asked Edwin if he would like her to come and visit, he smiled and nodded his head yes. Lisa was relieved!

On their first visit, Lisa and Edwin talked, laughed and played hoops. It was a great visit, and they couldn't wait to meet up again. Lisa was inspired to get her husband Alan involved, thinking that Edwin would enjoy some time with a male volunteer. Alan became a Hope Volunteer primarily for Edwin. Now, they all ride bikes, walk dogs, play kickball, basketball and football. They go for walks, talk, play with water pistols and hang out in the garage planning more visits!

Lisa and Alan know that Edwin looks forward to their visits. He gets out of the house to play, and also knows that people outside of his family care about him. Lisa says, "We believe our time with him enforces that he is smart, kind and important!"
