| July 2011: Message from the CEO |
| |
Samira K. Beckwith
President and CEO |
Celebrate this Fourth of July!
As we approach Independence Day, I am reminded of the many people who have made America great. The long list includes the Founding Fathers; men and women in uniform; and volunteers. The spirit of volunteerism has always been the strength of our country, as well as Hope.
Occasionally volunteers are recognized for special deeds, as seen in this edition of Messenger. However, Hope appreciates all of our volunteers for their tireless, unselfish efforts that have enhanced the lives of those in our care, every day for the past three decades. Thank you for all that you do. |
| Summer School |
As a Hope volunteer, you are encouraged to complete two education classes a year - to learn something new or to refine your skills. By attending summer school classes, you have the added benefit of enjoying tasty treats and winning prizes. Summer school is also the perfect opportunity to get your annual TB test. New this year, bring a friend and get a Hope tote!

| Volunteer Spotlight - Phone Call Saves a Life | |
Hope volunteer, Carol Jaques, was making bereavement calls - checking in on her list of families who had recently lost a loved one. She called upon a widow in Lake Placid, Florida and simply asked, "how are you doing?"
The widow replied, "I'm not doing so well at the moment."
Carol expected to hear how the widow was missing her husband but was surprised to learn the grieving woman was experiencing shortness of breath. Recognizing this as a symptom of cardiac stress, Carol asked the widow to take her blood pressure. The widow returned to the phone to reveal very high numbers. Carol calmly asked for a neighbor's phone number, then instructed the woman to unlock the front door and lie down. She called the neighbor and asked her to check on the ailing widow.
The following day, Carol worried about the widow and called her home. When she didn't answer, Carol called the neighbor who explained that, shortly after Carol's call, EMS transported the widow to the hospital. She suffered a significant heart attack. EMS shared that if Carol hadn't contacted the widow when she did, the woman may not have survived.
Each day, with every interaction, Hope volunteers have the ability to help others along life's journey. For Carol, a simple phone call paired with her careful instruction and quick action saved a woman's life! |
| For Your Health | |
Did you know that some bacteria are resistant to antibiotics? These bacteria are called Multi Drug-Resistant Organisms or MDROs. And the usual antibiotics simply can't kill these microscopic trouble-makers.
Individuals in Hope's care can be vulnerable to MDROs. However, for volunteers with patient interaction, there is plenty you can do to protect yourself and prevent the spread of these organisms.
Your primary line of defense is thorough hand washing!
After contact with any patients wash your hands. Be sure to:
- Use plenty of soap (or an alcohol-based gel)
- Rub your hands together for the amount of time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. And don't forget to clean under those fingernails!
Learn more about about these common MDROs by clicking the links below.
VRE - Vancomcycin-Resistant Entercocci
MRSA - Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

Faith Outreach Needs Assistance
Hope's Faith Outreach Program reaches out to clergy, staff and congregations to increase awareness about Hope's services: end-of-life care and support, caregiving, coping with grief or living with a serious illness. Volunteers are needed to make phone calls and compile data. Work from home or in the North Fort Myers office. Contact Colette Johns for information.
Honor Guard Now Recruiting
Hope's VALOR Program was created to honor the service men and women in our care. We are presently "recruiting" veterans and veteran supporters to Hope's Honor Guard. This special team presents veterans in our care with special recognition and a well-deserved salute. Contact Jean Best to learn how you can join.
Community Center Requests Support
The North Fort Myers Community Center needs summer office help. Volunteers will assist with various administrative and clerical tasks. Days and times are flexible. For more information or to schedule a time to volunteer, please contact Colette Johns. | |
