March 2011: Message from the CEO

samira beckwith

There are moments throughout our lives when nothing is more important than holding someone's hand.

This simple act can mean so many things: love, friendship, happiness, trust, comfort, peace - it is the substance of poetry. Yet when you see two people with hands clasped together, no words are even necessary. It is defined in your heart.

Hope's 11th Hour Program is about holding hands, figuratively and literally; at the end of life. The "11th hour" is a time when having a hand to hold can be the truest form of comfort and caring.  Sitting with a patient during their last hours of life is a privilege and the utmost sign of respect.

You can make a difference for others, through the 11th Hour Program, or in other ways. In this edition of Hope Messenger, you will find many new opportunities to consider.

Thank you for all that you do.

Warm Regards,

Samira K. Beckwith

President and CEO

Team Leaders Needed for 11th Hour Program - Lee County

Hope's 11th Hour Volunteer Program, assures that no one in our care has to die alone. When end-of-life nears, these compassionate volunteers provide companionship to people who do not have loved ones nearby or sit at the bedside when caregivers need respite. Hope needs highly-organized team leaders to manage the 11th Hour Volunteers and continue to provide this important service. Leaders will be notified when a patient is near end-of-life and will schedule volunteers to be present. If you are interested, please contact David Kowalski

Hope's 11th Hour Volunteers provide the precious gifts of respect and compassion, simply by being present.  For some, being at the bedside of a dying loved one is difficult.  Whether due to timing, geography or overwhelming emotions, some individuals in our care face their last hours of life alone. This is when 11th Hour Volunteers step in.  By holding a hand, speaking softly or sitting quietly, these volunteers provide peace and dignity when it matters most. Learn how you can fulfill this special role.  Older Women
