Message from the CEO
samira beckwith

Thanks to you, our volunteers, 2009 was a very good year for Hope. In fact, it has been a great decade.

Since the year 2000, you have given more than 665,000 hours of your time to help others in need!

However, numbers do not adequately tell our story.  Consider - or try to consider - how many patients and families were touched and comforted during all those thousands of hours. Think about how many people found emotional healing, spiritual peace, and had the companionship of a caring volunteer...the immeasurable support you have given to our office staff...the number of cookies baked!

We could not have cared for so many people in so many special ways without your support. You have set a beautiful example of community service.

We now look forward to another great year, knowing that you will be supporting our mission to provide exceptional care and support to every individual and their loved ones as they fulfill life's journey.

Best wishes in 2010!

Hands of Hope 100 Hour Challenge!
Have your hands held those of a patient or their family member?  Have you driven a patient to a doctor appointment?  Have you prepared mailings for Hope?  Have you received a donation at Hope Chest?  Have you held the leash of a Pet Visit Volunteer?  If yes, your hands are Hands of Hope.

Hope Volunteers support our mission of providing exceptional care and support to every individual and their loved ones as they fulfill life's journey.  In 2010, we are challenging each volunteer to consider a commitment of 100 hours a year in service to Hope and the families in our care.  Our goal is 100% at 100 in 2010 - every volunteer logging 100 hours of service during the year (less than two hours per week). Let's do it together!  Please consider our challenge as you make your New Year's Resolutions.  Hands of Hope Volunteers will receive special recognition at volunteer appreciation events.

HealthPark Office Volunteer Help Needed
The office at HealthPark is still looking for volunteers to help staff our reception desk in the office.  Tasks include welcoming guests, greeting vendors, calling staff for appointments, and directing traffic in the building. Please call Lynnan Grissinger if you are interested in learning more about the opportunity.

Facility Volunteers needed
We are in need of a couple volunteers to visit patients in Emeritus (located off Summerlin, south of Colonial) and The Palms (on Winkler Avenue, across from the former Southwest Regional Hospital).  Volunteer tasks will include visiting patients (both responsive and nonresponsive).  If you have a caring heart and patience, and could spare some time, please consider either of these locations as a volunteer assignment.  Contact David Kowalski for more information.

Q:  My volunteer specialist has been calling about Progress Notes and sending in my time.  When I volunteer it is from my heart to help the patients.  I do not need to have time logged for my service.   Is reporting my time really necessary?

A:  At Hope, we must record all of our volunteer services.  It is imperative that we log all activity, what we did and when, with patients.  This information must be entered into the patient's medical record including every contact we have with a patient and their family.  Patient care and support provided by volunteers, is a requirement of Medicare.  Every volunteer hour is important.  You make it possible for us to continue our mission of providing exceptional care and support to every individual as they fulfill life's journey.  So - please, send in your progress notes!

Continuing Education
Please contact your volunteer specialist to reserve a seat for all classes.

vetsHope Honor Guard and Veterans History Project Training*
We are seeking volunteers passionate about honoring our U.S. Armed Forces Veterans.  Hope Honor Guard is responsible for presenting patients with certificates and other items of appreciation for their service. The presentations, which often include family and friends of the Veteran, are very moving as the patient sometimes vetsshares memories of military service.  The presentations usually end with an official salute by an Honor Guard member who is a Veteran.  Volunteers who participate in this program will be required to adhere to a dress code, including a special beret provided by Hope.

11th Hour Volunteer Program*
Sitting with a patient during the last hours of life is a privilege and the utmost sign of respect. When a patient does not have family present, or the family is exhausted or uncomfortable being alone when their loved one dies, an 11th Hour volunteer can be a tremendous help. These special volunteers  are usually  called to a nursing home, assisted living facility, private home or a hospice house when a patient has 24-48 hours to live.  The hours and days vary depending on need.  If you would like to be on the list to help, you will need to attend a special, two-hour class.

A specific list of items required for the service will be provided for the volunteers to follow, and may include reception responsibilities, if requested. Volunteers will contact the family to confirm details and assist them with selecting personalized items for service and reception (develop a theme), such as background music, if needed. Volunteers will arrive one hour prior to service time to greet family and make sure the room is ready; assist Chaplain during and after the service,  and serve as a contact for the family, as needed.

Special Volunteer Opportunity
baseball field

Take me out to the Ball Park... again!

We are gearing up for another great season at the ball park.  Volunteers are asked to work at least two games.  Please call your volunteer specialist to reserve your spot at the concession stand.  Remember - you need to be able to stand and move around inside the concession stand.  It can get warm, but it's lots of fun!  Shirts will be provided to those who volunteer.  Remember, friends and family can help, too!  This is a great time to bring your spouse and neighbors to introduce them to Hope, and for a fun day together at the park.

Below is a schedule of the games as well as a link to the Spring Training home and away games

Concession Captains are needed!  There will be two captains per day in the concession stand; one opens and one closes the stand.  Captains are responsible to make sure each volunteer has a job and a break while in the concession stand.  Orientation is provided.  Good news: Many of our volunteers are experienced so they know what to do!

Please call your volunteer specialists now to sign up for your dates, jobs, and shirt sizes.

Opening Day (for Hope Volunteers) is Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Dinner (hotdogs, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks) is provided.  Sign up sheets will be available (at the park?) if you have not all ready signed up.  Tee shirts will be available for pick up and you will have a chance to meet your concession captions.  We look forward to seeing you there.  Please call your volunteer specialist before game day to tell us you are coming.  All volunteers should attend - we will review procedures, rules, an dchanges form last year.
