News from Amara

Thank you. With your support, this year's Amara luncheon raised over $345,000 to help children exit foster care. You are helping find safe homes and lifelong families for children in our community.

One highlight for me at the event was the debut of this video, featuring 11-year-old Daniel and 8-year-old Ashlyn. This is the essence of "From Hope to Home." If you missed it, we hope you'll watch now on YouTube and share it with your friends on Facebook.

It is stories like Daniel's and Ashlyn's that inspire and fuel our resolve to help more children leave foster care and find permanence. The children cannot wait.

Warm wishes,
John Morse, Executive Director

Thank you, Benjamin!

Benji found his adoptive family through Amara in 2007
Benjamin, adopted through Amara

Benjamin, age 4, overheard his mom, a table captain, talking about this year's Amara luncheon. Wishing to help more kids "find mommies and daddies and homes," Benjamin decided to donate his entire piggy bank to Amara. And, in turn, he melted the hearts of our staff!

Thank you to Benjamin and the many generous donors and community partners, of all ages, who make our work possible. The success of this year's luncheon is a reflection of your commitment to the children in our community in need of permanency.

Honoring an Exceptional Foster-to-Adopt Family

2012 Stella Mae Recipients
The Farlow Family with Adam Cornell

At the luncheon, we awarded Amara's Stella Mae Carmichael Award for 2012 to Randy and Heidi Farlow. The Farlows fostered and adopted Nicholas, a medically fragile toddler with significant developmental delays.

"When Nicholas came to us he couldn't go five feet without falling even though he was 2.5 years old. Now he can peddle a bike, he can gallop, and he can run!" says Heidi.

Since birth, Nicholas had been in and out of foster care and attempts to reunify him with his birthmother had been unsuccessful. In the care of Heidi and Randy, Nicholas is healing from his unstable past and overcoming his physical challenges.

Amara established the award in 2008 in honor of its namesake, Ms. Stella Mae Carmichael of Bellingham, who served as foster parent to hundreds of children during her lifetime. Each year Amara recognizes a family
who opens their hearts and homes in an exceptionally kind way to our community's children in foster care.
