News from Amara

First he heard the knock. Then he saw an unfamiliar woman at the door with a briefcase. Three-year-old Gavin immediately stopped playing. He walked across the living room, into the front hall, and grabbed his coat. He was ready to be moved out of his new home and into another.

After four moves in just six months, the pattern was predictable. Fortunately for Gavin, the woman at the door was not there to take him away. She was an Amara caseworker coming to support Gavin and his new forever family.

At Amara, we focus on finding permanent homes for children, especially children like Gavin who are at risk of moving from home to home while they wait in foster care for an adoptive family.

You have helped 66 children find a permanent home so far this year. Thank you for the transformative gift you have given to our community's children.

With warm holiday wishes,

John Morse, Executive Director

Amara Family Keeps Siblings Together

Siblings find home together
Axle, Chris and Senia are home

Siblings Axle, Senia and Chris were six, three, and two when they entered foster care - waiting for parents who'd adopt them together. Don and Sean were planning to adopt one or two children. But when the couple learned about Axle, Senia and Chris, they committed to the three siblings

Looking back on the adoption process, Don and Sean feel fortunate. "The children were resilient and we blended quite easily into a family," says Don. Transforming from a couple to a five-person household was challenging, though. "Parenting three children can be intense and financially it was a huge change, but we made it work," says Don.

Although the family's budget is tight these days, it didn't stop Don and Sean from sending a year-end gift to Amara. "Our donation was modest, but we wanted to express in some small way how grateful we are to Amara for all that was done to make it possible for our family to grow," says Don.

Joyful Party to Celebrate Adoption!

Junior League of Seattle
Junior League of Seattle

Over 130 children and parents joined Amara for cake, crafts, and music to celebrate National Adoption Day. The afternoon was filled with laughter and joy! Many thanks to the Junior League of Seattle and Julie Sotomura of PhotoMura Images for helping us throw this annual party for Amara families.

National Adoption Day is celebrated nationwide each year as families, adoption advocates, policymakers, judges and volunteers come together to honor adoptive families.

How You Can Help

Celebrate the holiday season by helping a child find a home:

  • Make a gift to Amara in honor of a loved one. We'll send your friend or family member a handwritten holiday card.
  • Become a community leader and inspire others by serving as a Table Captain at our 2011 luncheon
  • If you do your holiday shopping at Amazon.com, please use this link and Amara will receive 4 - 8.5% of your sales total (depending on your order volume).

Each time you spread Amara's message, a child comes one step closer to connecting with their forever family. To learn more about these opportunities, please email Megan or call her at 206.260.1704. Thank you!
