 May 2011

Dear Friends,

Thank you. Our recent luncheon was a very special celebration of our 90-year history. And we received unprecedented financial support for our work.

At the event, we honored our Luncheon Chairs, Bill and Mimi Gates and Reverend Samuel and Louise McKinney. As Amara begins its tenth decade of service, their example fuels our vision of "A Home for Every Child."

Thank you for joining with us to serve more children and families in the months, years, and decades ahead.

Best regards,
John Morse, Executive Director

P.S. If you would like a glimpse of the impact of your support, you might enjoy this 3-minute video from our luncheon.

Event Raises $269,000 for Vulnerable Children

Over 530 supporters attended Amara's Annual Luncheon on May 2nd, donating over $269,000--up 26% over last year--to fund Amara's work finding lifelong, caring families for children in foster care.

Luncheon highlights included a warm welcome from emcee Jean Enersen of KING 5 and a video featuring an adoptive mom and her 10-year-old daughter.

Regina Louise, key-note speaker

Regina Louise

Regina Louise, author of "Somebody's Someone," spoke about the importance of finding a forever family at any age. Regina was adopted in 2003 at the age of 40. In her own words, "The child in me will never be too old to be adopted, to be loved, to be somebody's someone."

Thank you to the many generous donors and community partners that made this year's luncheon a smashing success. A special thanks to our luncheon sponsors, matching pool donors, and table captains for their support and leadership.

Honoring an Exceptional Foster-to-Adopt Family

At the luncheon, Amara presented the fourth annual Stella Mae Carmichael Award to Greg and Sue Meritt. The Meritts welcomed Curtis, Coara and Cannon, a sibling group of three, into their home in the fall of 2009. The adoption was finalized one year later.

Honoring an amazing foster-to-adopt family

Greg and Sue with their children

As a foster-to-adopt family, Greg and Sue answered a community need: finding permanent homes for sibling groups in foster care. Of all children in foster care, 70% have another sibling in foster care. However, fewer than 30% are placed in a home together with their siblings.

Amara established the award in 2008 in honor of its namesake, Ms. Stella Mae Carmichael of Bellingham, who served as foster parent to hundreds of children during her lifetime. Each year Amara recognizes a family who exemplifies her unconditional love; her vision for and encouragement of children's futures; her blend of realism and hope; her spunk; and her superb parenting.

We Need Your Help

If you're interested in helping us create a successful 2012 Luncheon, please email Megan. We're looking for:

  • Table Captains. Their role is simple, yet paramount: bring nine people to the luncheon who are likely to be inspired by our mission.
  • Adoption and Foster Care Stories. We're looking for real-life, inspiring stories to share.
  • Sponsors. Enhance your corporate leadership in our community and make the future brighter for children in need by becoming a luncheon sponsor.
