February 2010
Dear Friends,

Faced with an urgent community need and a worldwide economic freefall, Amara entered 2009 with ambitious goals: serve more children--especially children of color--and keep more siblings together when they are adopted. We are proud to have made great strides toward these goals.

In 2009, Amara found homes for 65 vulnerable children and served more than 400 families. We are pleased and proud of the growth this represents over our 2008 results:
  • 27% more children placed in homes
  • 47% more siblings placed in homes together
  • 94% more children of color placed in homes
This work could not have been achieved without the assistance of our generous community of supporters and the wonderful families who choose to work with us--like Sam and Mike whom we feature in this newsletter.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to children in our community who need permanent, loving, forever families. With your support, 2010 will continue the gratifying momentum we have achieved for vulnerable children.

Best regards,
John Morse, Executive Director

Siblings Find Their Forever Family

3 boysIn adopting siblings Robert and Hillary, Sam and Mike say it was a difficult process, but rewarding. "It meant a lot to us when Robert said: 'You're papa, you're daddy, and I am your son'," says Mike.

Hillary was just two days old when she needed a foster-to-adopt family. "Her State social worker asked if we'd be interested in adopting her and possibly also her 15-month-old brother Robert," recall dads, Sam and Mike. "We hardly knew a thing about Robert--but we took a leap of faith. We picked Hillary up from the hospital knowing that Robert might join our family too."

Complications with the legal process meant that Sam, Mike and Hillary had to wait a year before Robert could join them. But Robert was finally reunited with his sister and three months later, the adoption of both siblings was finalized. "The process of adopting Hillary and Robert was the most difficult thing I've ever gone through, but also the most rewarding," says Sam.

"Hillary adores her big brother," adds Sam. "Every morning when she wakes up she points her little finger towards Robert and calls out his name."

NWCF Ann. logo -- smallestAmara has earned the Northwest Children's Fund's (NWCF) Evergreen Grant, a three-year renewable grant of $30,000 awarded to organizations whose programs have consistently demonstrated high impact, effectiveness and merit. We are so grateful for NWCF's generous support.

Also, as NWCF celebrates its first quarter century of connecting our community with children in need, NWCF has designated 25 past grant recipients as "Silver Anniversary Partners." Amara is one of those agencies, selected for its long, consistent and significant partnership with NWCF in the fight against child abuse and neglect.
