THE WINES:
Berroia Txakoli 2010 $17.99 Txakoli wines have a slightly "spritzy" effervescent character similar to vinho verdes from Portugal but whereas the latter are light wines with fresh, clean flavors and bright acidity, Txakolis have more complex aromas and depth of flavor on the palate along with a firm minerality that is their signature. 89 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Bodegas Berroja's pale straw-colored 2010 Berroia is a blend of 85% Hondarribi Zuri with the balance Riesling and Folle Blanche. This enticing effort receives a nice aromatic lift from its Riesling component along with floral, mineral, green apple, and saline notes. Crisp, savory, and well-balanced, this value priced effort is meant for drinking over the next 12-18 months. El Brozal Blanco 2009 $32.99 El Brozal Blanco is a unique white wine made from a single vineyard. El Brozal Blanco is a rarity, one of a few single vineyard wines from Rioja Alavesa, Rioja as a whole, or any wine region in Spain. As with the finest wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux or Piedmont, El Brozal Blanco is a wine that bears the distinct stamp of its terruņo (terroir). With great clarity and precision, it sings the music of its specific birthplace. The 182 6-pack cases are made from a "field blend" of Moscatel, Viura, Malvasia, Garnacha Blanca and Jaen, white varieties planted in the 1930's to provide nourishment to pickers! Today, instead of eating these grapes, David Sampedro turns them into one of the smallest production white wines from Rioja! The 2008 Vintage received 92+ Points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Zestos 2010 $8.99 This tremendous quality wine is made from old vine Tempranillo and Garnacha and it sells for a song! The Tempranillo adds body and the Garnacha adds brightness. The tannins are soft, making this a very easy-to-drink wine when young. Zestos show a touch of earth and spice. In addition to being the capital of Spain, Madrid has recently become the center of one of the most interesting and innovative wine regions on the Iberian Peninsula. Most Spaniards are unaware that Madrid makes wine and because Vinos de Madrid is not yet "on the radar" of Spanish or American wine consumers, it is a great source of incredible values today. Ludovicus 2009 $12.99 Ludovicus is a wine made in a style that appeals to both new world and old world palates. An organic blend of 40% Garnacha, 15% Tempranillo, 15% Cariņena, 20% Syrah and 10% Merlot from Terra Alta, a high-elevation region located south of Barcelona. Similar to Yecla and Vinos de Madrid, Terra Alta is one of Spain's up-and-coming wine regions with an identity built on exciting projects and progressive innovation. This ripe, juicy, vibrantly big-fruited red wine is a real crowd pleaser, and Ludovicus's easy drinking nature makes it a versatile wine, either with meat and pork main courses or with more casual tapas or small plates. Of course, this wine is also a great sipper on its own. Cal Blanca 2007 $15.99 90 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The opaque purple-colored 2007 Cal Blanca is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines. It was aged in seasoned French oak for six months followed by three months in 5000-liter concrete tanks to provide unoaked oxygenation. It delivers a nose of roasted mineral, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with exceptional richness, outstanding concentration, and a lengthy finish. Drink this remarkable value over the next six years. El Brozal Tinto 2009 $32.99 92 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2009 Brozal was sourced from a biodynamically farmed vineyard and is a field blend of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 10% Garnacha. It was fermented and macerated in a custom-made tank made of 50% oak and 50% stainless steel crafted by winemaker David Sampedro. Alcoholic fermentation was with native yeasts, malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel, and aging took place in various sized barrels, 50% new, for 10 months. A glass-coating opaque purple color, the wine displays a super-fragrant bouquet of minerals, violets, Asian spices, tobacco, a hint of balsamic, and assorted black fruits. This is followed by a sweetly-fruited, layered, succulent wine with plenty of underlying fine-grained tannin. Give it 5-6 years to fully blossom and enjoy it from 2015 to 2029.
