Dear Perspectives Friends and Family,
It's only February and 71% of our seniors have already been accepted to college, with over $5.5 million offered in scholarships! Our students are on their way to success in college and in life.
With so many seniors ready to graduate, our student recruitment team has been hard at work lining up the next wave of students for the fall. We are happy to report that Perspectives 2012-2013 acceptance letters will be mailed out to prospective students this week. With nearly 1,400 applications received and only 360 9th grade spaces currently available, we continue to see a strong demand for school choice and widespread support of our schools.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we are reminded of many talented and accomplished African-Americans who have made a positive impact on the world. We hope, through the dedication of our teachers and by living the 26 principles of A Disciplined Life, our students will go on to demonstrate honesty, integrity, and decency as they become the future leaders of this great nation.

Perspectives and Climate Cycle featured on ABC7 Chicago |
|
Students at Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy are learning about climate change with the help of Climate Cycle, a Chicago-based nonprofit that has funded solar panels and a greenhouse project for this school. Teacher Dan King and 8th grade students Renay Harris, Heru Farrakhan, and Jacarri Relf were interviewed regarding their current indoor greenhouse projects. The students are growing seedlings indoors with hopes of transplanting them to the school garden this spring. See the news segment and learn more at ABC News Chicago. |

New Schools for Chicago and Chicago Public Schools held the 5th Annual New Schools Expo January 28th to help elementary and high school students and parents learn about Chicago's newest public and charter schools as parents search for a better education and "choice" for their child. Perspectives was well represented as students, parents, teachers, administrators, and former graduates volunteered to share their success stories with potential students and their families. Over 300 school admission applications were received, and Perspectives senior Robert Simpson was featured on NBC 5 Chicago describing his experience at Perspectives and his plans to attend college in the fall. See the video below, compliments of NBC 5 Chicago.

A: Our junior internship program.
Our sincere thanks go to the collection of over 100 companies and individuals who hosted over 400 interns from this year's junior class. The 5-week internship program exposed students to a variety of professions and offered real-life work experience to our scholars. Here are highlights from a few internships:
- SRAM interns traveled to Madison to visit TREK bicycles' headquarters and domestic production facility. They also went to Indianapolis to tour SRAM's domestic manufacturing facility of high-end carbon fiber road wheels and learn about bicycles used in races such as the Tour de France.
- The students at Allstate Investments in Northbrook spent time on-site learning about finance and insurance, and took field trips to Lake Forest College and Allstate's Auto and Home Claim Training Center.
- Coldwell Banker interns worked individually with real estate brokers all over the South Side of Chicago and got a taste of residential real estate.
- The interns at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine observed a live surgery.
- The Merchandise Mart intern got a behind-the-scenes look at events planning at one of the country's most prominent design centers.
- Ernst & Young and IIT interns gave final presentations to mentors and school administrators, sharing stories and lessons learned during their internships.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered to mentor our students this year. Interested in participating in this program next year, or looking for summer interns? Please contact Jane Esser, jesser@pcsedu.org. |

Students learn from Black History Month:
DEMONSTRATE HONESTY, INTEGRITY AND DECENCY |
|
| |
To celebrate Black History Month, students from Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy's Media Writing class wrote about accomplished African Americans from a variety of fields. Senior Craig Carter, a member of the school's first graduating class, chose to feature Bill Russell because he exemplifies the A Disciplined Life® principle Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and decency.
"I wrote about Bill Russell because he's a little-known civic leader, and he set an example for what players in the NBA should be today," Carter said. "He has a high regard for others and refused to sign autographs because he didn't want to seem better than anyone else. I can take away from Mr. Russell that you're no better than your neighbor and to treat everyone equally."
