Dear Perspectives Friends and Family,
Happy New Year! Our hallways are buzzing with excitement as students return to classes refreshed from the holiday break and ready to learn.
This year is off to a great start and we have much to celebrate including a visit from the Chicago Cubs, 2 Posse Scholars, our first student accepted to an Ivy League school (Princeton), and 44% of our upcoming 2012 graduates already accepted to college!
Please save the date for Perspectives' 15th Annual Benefit on May 9th, 2012 at The Westin Chicago River North. We are delighted to announce the support of our generous co-chairs Eric Johnson, President and CEO of Baldwin Richardson Foods; Joe Perillo, President and CEO of Perillo Auto Group; and Eric E. Whitaker, M.D., M.P.H, Executive Vice President for Strategic Affiliations at The University of Chicago Medical Center. We will be presenting our first-ever A Disciplined LifeŽ award to Tony Anderson, Vice Chair and Midwest Managing Partner, Ernst & Young LLP, for embodying our 26 ethical principles.
Join us this year as we continue to support the strong work ethic our students and staff demonstrate and celebrate our victories along the way.

Students share A Disciplined Life stories |
|
Each December, students at each of our campuses present what they have learned from studying one of the A Disciplined Life principles. At Perspectives Middle Academy, 6th grade student Candace Leeper picked "Live a healthy lifestyle" and used information she learned in her Healthy Lifestyle class to share ways to eat healthy and exercise. She presented her findings in a video on Xtranormal.com, which allows users to create animated videos with dialogue.
Principal Sauda Porter remarked, "I was blown away watching our students present their A Disciplined Life Summit Projects. It was amazing to see that our students really understand A Disciplined Life--not just what the principles mean but what they mean to them personally. It is an unbelievable experience witnessing the lives of our students transformed before our very eyes."

Ernst & Young LLP is a long-time partner and generous supporter of Perspectives. Through individual donations just in the month of December, over $13,500 was raised in support of Perspectives students to adopt a classroom to supply Kindles to our Senior A.P. classes, and literature books to our Junior classes.
Extending their generosity beyond our school walls, Ernst & Young has supported a Gift-Giving Program for families in need for the past 6 years. This year, Ernst & Young employees teamed up with our Perspectives Leadership Academy to raise over $11,000 in gifts to spread holiday cheer to 12 families. When the time came to present the families with their abundance of gifts, the experience was moving to all. |

Congratulations to Posse Scholars Robert Simpson and Ronald Brown!
Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy senior Robert Simpson received a full academic scholarship to Denison University. Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus senior Ronald Brown received a full academic scholarship to Trinity University.
The Posse Foundation, in partnership with colleges across the country, conducts a highly competitive interview process to select groups of 10 students to form "Posses" on partner campuses. These Posse students then support each other during their college tenure while bringing diversity and leadership to their campuses. Students are selected for their outstanding leadership records and strong work ethic. This is the first year Perspectives has had 2 students selected as Posse Scholars. |

Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy honor roll students were rewarded last week with a visit from members of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. We were honored to have the Cubs new President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein, and generous activist and Cubs board member Laura Ricketts in attendance, along with players Matt Szczur (CF), Tony Campana (OF), David DeJesus (RF), Chris Carpenter (RHP), Josh Vitters (3B), and James Russell (LHP). Broadcaster Keith Moreland emceed the celebration and fielded questions with the help of Rudy Jaramillo (Hitting Coach), Randy Bush (Assistant General Manager), Lester Strode (Bullpen Coach), Shiraz Rehman (Assistant to the General Manager) and Michael Lufrano (Executive Vice President of Community Affairs and General Counsel).
Students asked hard-hitting questions about challenges the Cubs faced during their careers, where they attended college and what they studied. Cheers erupted among students as several players admitted their favorite subject in school was math, followed closely by science and English. A Disciplined Life principles were discussed throughout the event as players demonstrated perseverance by successfully defeating cancer, demonstrated a strong work ethic to get to the major leagues, and told stories of generosity and compassion as they volunteered their time to help others, with Matt Szczur even donating bone marrow to save a young girl's life. The celebration ended with a hearty supply of peanuts and Cracker Jacks as students were rewarded for a semester of hard work.
Our special thanks go out to Cubs players and management for their support of our students.
Go Cubs Go!
