Our Perspectives

Dear Perspectives Friends and Family,

Thanksgiving is here and we have much to be grateful for this month. Your continued support is at the top of our list. This past month we saw a tremendous outpouring of generousity from individuals like you, and we are truly thankful.

With the help of our friends, students, and staff, we held our first ever A Disciplined Life® Expo, to a flood of emotions and rave reviews. Our students demonstrated the 26 principles that are the foundation of our social and emotional learning curriculum and gained several fans along the way. The Expo was a team effort and its success was made possible by mk The Restaurant's amazing reception, and the generous support of our long-time friends Michael and Lisa Kornick.

Another opportunity for us to appreciate a wide range of community supporters was the November 2nd launch of this year's internship program for our juniors. Our thanks go out to those who have sponsored our 425 student interns this year, offering them priceless exposure to the business world.

We are also thankful this November for all who have taken a few mintues out of their busy days to vote for Perspectives in the Pepsi Refresh Project as we seek to win $50,000 for our schools. We are grateful for every vote cast as we continue to make our way to the top ten before the end of the month. Please continue to show your support by voting daily through November 30th.

Before we roll into December, we will round out this month with a Feast for Thanks to celebrate our students and their families, and Open Houses to recruit new students to join the Perspectives family next year. During this busy holiday season, we continue to be thankful for your generous support.

May these coming months be filled with joy.

Rhonda Hobbs

A Disciplined Life® Expo = Success!

Our first annual A Disciplined Life® Expo took place the evening of October 27th, with over 90 guests in attendance. We reconnected with current supporters and introduced many new faces to the social and emotional learning curriculum that makes Perspectives unique. Many of our guests showed an outpouring of emotions as they were moved by our student stories and the effectiveness of the A Disciplined Life principles. A huge thanks go out to Michael and Lisa Kornick and MK The Restaurant for their continued support.

Michael and Lisa Kornick

Our staff and student volunteers worked hard to prepare and did a fantastic job displaying the Perspectives difference. Guest Mindy Douthit, professor at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy said, "Your students own it--they own their work, their story and [A Disciplined Life] in their lives". We hope to see you all next year!

Student Internships Are Underway!

Interns with Governor Quinn at IITThen cast another vote by texting 109956 to Pepsi (73774) on your mobile phone. to the tune of $50,000 we hope.

The 2011-2012 internship program for our juniors started November 2nd as students dispersed across the city to meet their mentors. For five Wednesdays from November to January, this year's interns will get a taste of the business world as they gain on-the-job experience at locations throughout the city. On their first day, Alex and Richard from Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy attended an event where they met Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. A short video was created to document the events of their day. Other students visited Feinberg School of Medicine and met first year students' cadavers, enjoyed a field trip to the EcoGrove wind farm, toured the UIC facilites with their executive chef, and blogged about their experience with the Chicago Sky's WNBA team. Our thanks go out to all who volunteered to mentor interns this year.

At Perspectives, we are grateful for all of our generous supporters.  Whether you have given financially, providedvaluable advice or helped in other ways, our success would not be possiblewithout you.  But it all starts with our hard-working teachers, who devote themselves every day to preparing our students for success in college and in life.  Please join us this Thanksgiving in giving thanks to our dedicated staff by asking your friends and family to support us in the Pepsi Refresh Project.  We are a finalist and can win $50,000 for our staff and students--with your support!

Here's how you can help:

Every day through the end of November, vote by texting 109956 to PEPSI (73744) or online at www.refresheverything.com/adisciplinedlife.

Tell all your friends and family this Thanksgiving!

We have already moved from 49th to 33rd in the rankings, but we need to make it to the top 10 by the end of the month to win the $50,000.  It only takes 10 seconds to vote, and it is an easy and meaningful way to show your gratitude to our teachers this Thanksgiving.
