Our Perspectives

Dear Perspectives Friends and Family,

As our students are working hard to finish the first quarter strong, good news continues to come in for Perspectives.  Earlier this month, we were awarded a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Board of Education to share our A Disciplined Life® curriculum with other schools. On the heels of this grant, our co-founder Diana Shulla-Cose was featured in a long article about A Disciplined Life in the Huffington Post. Meanwhile, our students are continuing to accomplish great things, from winning debate competitions to cleaning up their neighborhoods. This Thursday night, we have a tremendous opportunity to celebrate this good news and the hard work of our teachers and students at "Teaching the Mind, Reaching the Heart", our A Disciplined Life Expo.

It's an exciting time to be a part of Perspectives Charter Schools.  I hope you can join us this Thursday and see some of the great things our students are doing!

PCS awarded $400,000 grant to spread A Disciplined Life®

On October 4, Perspectives Charter Schools was awarded a $400,000, two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help us spread the word about our A Disciplined Life curriculum. Perspectives was one of only three schools nationwide to receive a "dissemination grant", designed to help high-quality charter schools partner with other schools to improve academic performance and share effective practices.  We will use the grant funding to extensively evaluate and refine our A Disciplined Life curriculum and ultimately share it with other schools.

A Disciplined Life has been the foundation of the Perspectives school culture for the past 15 years. This grant is a recognition of the hard work our teachers and staff have put into helping our students live A Disciplined Life, and provides us with an opportunity to help even more students throughout our city and beyond.

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY:

one of our principles of A Disciplined Life®

Perspectives students flexed their communications skills at their first debate competition of the year on October 1 at Frederick Douglass Academy.  Eight two-person teams from Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin and Perspectives High School of Technology participated in the competition, and the results were outstanding.  Our overall record was 22-10, and the team of James Smith and Avin Williams finished in second place overall.

Perspectives co-founder and president Diana Shulla-Cose also showed the power of effective communication in a feature-length article in the Huffington Post about A Disciplined Life.  In the article, she explained the impact of the Department of Education grant:

"It means that we can deepen and continue to refine our work around social and emotional learning practices, and that we can begin to deeper evaluate how our work with students links to student achievement. It also means that we're in a position right now to partner with some other charters and improve in ways that we haven't had the time or resources to do so. And then it's about being able to disseminate [our program], being able to impact more than [our] five schools, to share this with other schools in our district and beyond."

Perspectives was also featured in an article on the Catalyst Chicago website, focusing on how the federal grant will help Perspectives "make good on an oft-forgotten selling point of charter schools: to innovate and share what they've learned."
