Perspectives Charter Schools
Letter From Our CEO
Greetings!

On Saturday, January 29, Perspectives participated in the 4th Annual New Schools Expo at Soldier Field.  We met with thousands of families looking for better schools for their children.  I was astounded by the number of families that personally told me they came to this event specifically for Perspectives.  In six hours, we collected over 250 applications and handed out 1,600 more for the 2011-2012 lottery.  At the end of the day, when most other schools were packing up or had already left, Perspectives still had a line of families asking questions and filling out applications.  Amazing!!!

Thank you to all our staff, students and parents who attended with me and who helped tell the "Perspectives story" to prospective students and their families.  And a special thank you to Perspectives Leadership Academy 9th grade student Kwantel Frazier, who volunteered at the event.  He told me this about his experience at Perspectives:

"I have opportunities available to me that many of my friends will never have.  I now understand that I am a young adult and the decisions I make now are just as important as the ones I will make later.  I have learned to make wise decisions.  And while my old friends are wasting time, I am preparing for my future.  One day I will be a Perspectives Principal, preparing young men and woman to be leaders, too."

Kwantel can be seen below in a photo with Perspectives Director of Compliance and Information Systems, DeBorah L. Pusateri-Krishnan, and with mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel.

News in Our Schools

Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy

On Saturday, January 29th, a team of three students from Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy competed in the
"Future City Competition" at UIC.  For this event, middle school students from all over the country worked to design and build a model city that could exist in the future.

The Perspectives team included siblings Esiri, Efe and Ese Omene.  They constructed a city using their knowledge of engineering and also wrote a narrative about how the city functions.  The team did extremely well, winning three awards for themselves and the school - Best Computer Design, Most Diverse and Sustainable City, and Best Planned Zones.

    Perspectives Leadership Academy

Perspectives Leadership Academy partnered with Money Think, a financial literacy mentoring organization from the University of Chicago, to implement a 10-week entrepreneurship course for a group of 11th grade students.

After learning about the components of an effective business plan, the students decided to execute their own plan by sponsoring a concert at the Perspectives Auburn Gresham Campus.  Local musicians from the school community will be auditioning soon and Money Think will choose three to five artists to play in the concert.

This will provide a safe and fun afterschool event for our students.  The concert will take place in the spring.

    Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus

More than twenty students from Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus have completed online honors courses.  These self-motivated and determined students - from 8th, 10th and 12th grades - met in the computer lab every morning to work on these classes.

High school honors courses that have been completed by our students include, Mandarin Chinese, World Languages, Psychology, Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Civics, Health, Career Planning and Journalism.  Three 8th grade students took 9th grade Algebra, while others completed courses in Health, Life Skills, Physical Education, Computer Fundamentals and Language Arts.

    Perspectives High School of Technology

A team of students and staff from Perspectives High School of Technology will be participating in the TECH 2011 Conference in Springfield this May.  The purpose of this conference is to help raise awareness about the importance of technology in the classroom and to produce additional capital to promote these types of educational opportunities.

In other news, five 9th graders are in the final stage of the application process for summer school at the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.  Also, we are excited to announce that the Class of 2011 has been offered over $750,000 in merit-based scholarships, to date.  This puts them well on their way to achieving their $2 million goal!

    ADL Principles
    A Disciplined Life Principles

"I am proud to see our scholars proactively taking steps to resolve issues in a safe and respectful way," said Perspectives teacher Chase Heitman.

At Perspectives, we teach the "Six Steps to Conflict Resolution." These steps are discussed in our A Disciplined Life© (ADL) classes to help students learn how to solve problems peacefully, whether they are at school or at home.  These steps can be a powerful strategy, helping students feel secure in knowing that there is a composed way to resolve issues. Students are also encouraged to use teachers as a resource for mediation when conflicts arise.

"Several of the students in my ADL class have taken initiative to go through the six steps on their own to work out problems," said Heitman.  "As a teacher, I am so very proud to see this."
