Dear Perspectives Friends and Supporters,
The many joys and rewards of helping our students grow to become confident, motivated, self-fulfilled, and purposeful young adults are sometimes offset by circumstances that neither they nor we can control. Such was the case with the recent, senseless, fatal shooting of Perspectives 10th grader, Andrew Powell. We were able to keep Andrew safe at school, where he was a good student, budding leader and had 100% attendance this year. Unfortunately, we were unable to counteract the violence that exists in his community.
This terrible tragedy only strengthens our resolve to ensure a safe, nurturing environment where students not only learn, but thrive and flourish academically, socially and emotionally. With your support, we have created a place where students want to come to school - because we value them for who they are, because we expect the best from them, and because we believe in them even more than they sometimes believe in themselves.
We help our students dream a bigger dream, and then help them make that dream a reality. It is truly inspiring to see how determined and motivated our students are. It restores my hope for a better world because, in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

Sincerely,

Rhonda Hopps, CFA
Chief Executive Officer

Peace Alliance Gets Under Way
|
Perspectives' new Peace Alliance is a group of students, parents, and staff who are committed to "keeping the peace - in the school, on the street, and in the home," says Director of Community Relations, Glennese Ray, who is coordinating the effort. Initial Peace Alliance meetings involved a core group of students at each school. "They really came up with a lot of great ideas that we'll be working to flesh out," she said, "everything from creating posters to organizing rallies, distributing flyers, and many other community awareness projects."
Ultra Foods has joined with Perspectives to help support the Safe Passage program. Just save the receipts for everything you purchase from Ultra between September 1 and December 31, 2010 and hand deliver them to a school office or mail them to Glennese Ray at Perspectives Charter Schools, 3663 S Wabash Ave, 3rd Fl Chicago IL 60653 and Ultra will donate 5 percent of the total purchases to Safe Passage. For more information or to get involved, contact Glennese Ray.

A Disciplined Lifeİ in Action
|
Solve Conflicts Peacefully is a key principle of A Disciplined Lifeİ (ADL), and it's one we often address in dealing with discipline issues. At Perspectives Middle Academy, for example, two students exchanged angry words and used disrespectful language. Both students were sent to talk about the incident with their A Disciplinedİ Life advisor, As a result, one students committed to work on the ADL principle Respecting Each Other's Differences, while the other agreed to work on the principle of Love Who You Are. They shook hands and the conflict was resolved peacefully.
By employing the measures of peaceful conflict resolution, both students avoided disciplinary actions and potential suspensions. "It's just one of many examples of how we apply ADL principles to help resolve everyday problems," said Perspectives Co-Founder and Chief Culture Officer Diana Shulla-Cose.

Financial Literacy Presented by MoneyThink
|
Join us for a special entrepreneurship and financial literacy workshop at the Perspectives Community Theater on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. The workshop will run from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and will be conducted by MoneyThink.org, whose training program is based on the belief that developing good financial habits, and learning to take on the risks and responsibilities of being a good entrepreneur, is as much a matter of how you think as it is what you know. MoneyThink will also be offering an in-school entrepreneur training program for 11th-graders at Perspectives Leadership Academy this year, and financial literacy training classes for seniors throughout the Perspectives network.
The event is free and open to the public, no reservations are required. The Perspectives Community Theater is located at the Perspectives Auburn Gresham campus, 8131 South May, Chicago, Illinois 60620.

| Meet the Staff: Perspectives Profiles | Tiffany Harston, Assistant Principal at Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy (MSA), never planned on making education her career. "My undergraduate degree was in Finance," she says, "and I was working in financial services when I became involved with Perspectives as a math tutor. I'd go to the South Loop campus before work to meet with my students, and it was just so exciting when I could see that they 'got it '- when I could see the light bulb come on."
Tutoring came so naturally to Tiffany that she started to think education might be her true calling. "People kept saying to me, 'You should be a teacher! You should be a teacher!' and when I learned about an opening for a Program Manager at Perspectives Leadership Academy, I went for it." And she got it. Tiffany then moved up to become Assistant Principal at MSA when it opened three years ago.
"The most rewarding part of my work is being an agent of change," says Tiffany, and her goal is to help her students be the best they can be, "no matter where they've come from, no matter what baggage they may have, no matter what they may have experienced in the past. That's my job."
Tynesha Parker, College Counselor at Perspectives High School of Technology, brings considerable experience with college preparation to her position, having worked for a number of years with Upward Bound, the federally-funded college prep program for low-income youth.
Tynesha is currently working on her Masters in School Counseling at Chicago State University, and in her new job at Perspectives, she will be helping students with their college selection process and the preparation of their applications to a minimum of five schools, and applications for at least 10 scholarships.
When asked what she likes most about her new job, Tynesha says she really enjoys working with students on setting goals and developing plans to meet them. And when asked what her goal is for her new job, she replies without hesitation: "One hundred percent college placement!" |
