Dear Perspectives Friends and Supporters,
Our new school year is off to a roaring start! As I looked around me during the first few
days of school, everything I saw and heard made me proud. Just a few of the many special moments
included:
Thanks to your interest and support, our students and
programs become stronger every year, and we are able to navigate the
treacherous waters of the current education funding environment.
We're counting on your continued support, and here are a few
of many ways you can become involved:
Thank you again, and very best wishes from all of us in the
Perspectives family!
Sincerely,

Perspectives Staff Take On New Roles
| Dean of Academic Leadership at Perspectives Calumet High School, Eron Powell. Photo courtesy of Jose More/Chicago News Cooperative. |
Eron Powell is new to the position of Dean of Academic
Leadership at Calumet
High School, but he's no
stranger to Perspectives. As a History teacher at Perspectives Calumet Middle School
for the past three years, Eron strongly values that Perspectives offers
"education linked to love." It's all about raising the bar and expecting
the most of students, says Eron. "If their character is right, the
academics will follow." Our students are fortunate to have the benefit of
Eron's passionate commitment to education that enriches the mind as well as the
spirit. After five years as an admissions counselor at Northern Illinois
University and Ashford University,
Antoine Finner decided he wanted to switch from the college side of the table
to high school side. Having met and
worked on a number of occasions with Tony Seiden, Perspectives Director of
College Counseling, Antoine was particularly impressed with Perspectives'
College for Certain environment. "I'm
really looking forward to helping our juniors start the transition from high
school students to college scholars," he says. We're pleased to welcome Antoine to his new position as College
Counselor at Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy. Perspectives is pleased to announce that Perspectives Calumet Middle School
teacher, Karen Schmidt, has moved up to the position of Humanities
Instructional Leader at Perspectives Calumet High School of Technology. As Instructional Leader, Karen oversees and
provides guidance and support to humanities teachers on curriculum
implementation and classroom instruction. Her future goal is to become a school
principal, and she says, "I am so excited by this opportunity to work with the other
teachers and see not just what's happening in my classroom, but what's
happening in all the classrooms with all the students. It is so rewarding to know that our students really
are gaining the necessary skills to be successful here, in college, and in life."

Internships Placements Needed for Record Number of Juniors in 2010-2011
|
Approximately 475 students will participate in junior year internships during 2010-11. |
With over 50 percent more high school juniors to find
internships for, Program Director Jane Esser has her hands full this year!
"We expect to have 425 juniors this year, up
from 275 last year, and we are looking to place all of them with mentors across
the city in many different career areas." For most of our students, the junior year internship is one
of the first times they are exposed to a business environment, and it really
starts them thinking about college and career paths. Internship mentors are asked to commit to having
Perspectives students work with them on five dedicated Wednesdays in the spring
when the juniors do not have school. The
dates this year will be February 2, February 16, March 9, March 23, and April
13, 2011. There is no cost to the
mentors, and the structure of the days is as flexible as possible to
accommodate their schedules. You can also
help by being a presenter at one of the Perspectives Career Panels, which will
be held on November 10 and November 17, 2010. People from many different walks of life talk about their jobs and
career fields, helping students begin to understand the range of options
available to them. To learn more about
mentoring an intern or joining a Career Panel, download the Internship Program Mentor Information Sheet 2010-11, email Jane Esser, or contact her at 312-604-2109.

Living A Disciplined LifeŠ though Athletics
|

You might be surprised to know that Perspectives currently
has 600 student athletes competing on 45 teams including football, basketball,
rugby, softball, baseball, track, soccer, wrestling, cheerleading and
volleyball. Unlike most high school
athletic teams, several of Perspectives' teams are "co-oped" between two or
more network schools. The varsity
football team, for example, is made up of players from each of the four high
schools. Athletic Director Vinay Mullick is looking forward to
another strong year for Perspectives athletics. In past years, Perspectives teams have won six Chicago Public School
Conference Championships, two Chicago Public School City Final Appearances,
five Illinois High School Association state playoff victories, and have
qualified for multiple city and state championships. We're also pleased to report that one in
three Perspectives student athletes has achieved all-academic status, earning a
grade point average of 3.0 or better. This year, Groupon.com, the online discount coupon
service, will be sponsoring a special fundraising campaign to help support Perspectives
athletics. The planned date of the
campaign is October 13, 2010 - possibly extending to October 14, too - and the
funds raised will go toward new uniforms for the girls and boys basketball teams
and the basketball cheerleaders. We'll
have more information on this in our October newsletter, so stay tuned! |
