Students of the 2010 Perspectives/IIT FIRST Robotics team.
Robotics Team
Sean Taylor, Motorola employee and volunteer at Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy (MSA) is a coach of the school's FIRST© Robotics team, and one of ten Motorola employees from around the world to receive the 2010 Motorola CEO Award for Volunteerism. This award is a Motorola tradition, created in 1992 to encourage worldwide community involvement and recognize exceptional service among Motorola employees.

For the last two years, Sean has led a group of students at MSA in the FIRST© Robotics Competition, where students work in teams to create robots and then test them in regional and national FIRST© Robotics Competitions. Last year, our robotics team placed 10th of 42 teams in the Midwest Regional competition, making it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated in a close match. Sean is on board to lead our team again this year!
Perspectives Coach Named Local Hero; Sports Teams Gear Up for Fall Schedule
basketball camp
Our very own Vinay Mullick, Perspectives Athletic Director, was recently named an ESPN Local Hero. Vinay was nominated in recognition of his dedication to enriching the lives of young students both as a coach and as a teacher.

In the last year, under Vinay's direction, Perspectives won a number of championships including the Perspectives Calumet Varsity Girls track team win of their IHSA-2A state sectional!

In 2010-11, Vinay's teams, which include track, basketball, football, rugby, baseball, softball, and volleyball will compete to make it to the championships again. Perspectives is introducing three new intramural clubs next year - bowling, cross-country, and wrestling!

To support these teams, the Athletic Department receives donations from a number of donors who contribute both time and equipment. Last year, Nike donated baseball bats, basketballs and other sports equipment to help offset the cost of these programs. If you or someone you know would like to support our Athletic Teams, please contact Vinay Mullick at vmullick@perspectivescs.org.

Close to 1,000 of our students are participating in nearly 25 different scholastic, athletic and artistic camps and college programs this summer - more students than ever before!  With a whopping 45 students, our participation in the USI Network Summer Accelerated Math Camp (SAMC) and Summer Writer's Workshop is the largest by any one charter school in the program.  The SAMC, held at the University of Chicago during the month of July, is a highly selective program designed to engage students who are especially talented in mathematics in projects focused on economics, biology and genetics.

Other programs Perspectives students are attending include Xavier University of Louisiana SuperScholar/Excel, which prepares students for college through test preparation and courses that strengthen critical thinking, reading, writing and math in the heart of New Orleans; Girl Scouts Camp CEO where girls are matched with female CEOs as week-long mentors, assisting them in career choices and planning; Wallis Annenberg Scholars program at USC Summer Seminars, a two-year commitment for students to participate in a month-long college immersion program in a subject of their choice and receive college credits; the highly selective Andover (MS)2 Program a Math and Science for Minority Students program where two of our students are studying math, science and English for three consecutive summers at the Phillips Academy at Andover, preparing them for careers in engineering, science, medicine, computers, and other technical fields; and the University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program, a three-year enrichment program where students select from classes in literature, mathematics, science, social studies and writing, taught by the best teachers at the U of C.

Several students are participating in Project Exploration in partnership with the Field Museum, gaining valuable skills as Junior Paleontologists and Dinosaur Giants - a docent program for public science exhibits. Many more are interning at YMCA sports and arts programs across the city through Youth Ready Chicago. Through our continuing partnership with Elev8, middle school students in summer school are also taking part in sports, pre-engineering and cuisine clubs, to name a few!
