A New School Year Begins
Calumet campusWe wish the entire Perspectives family a productive, healthy, and successful school year! Our classrooms are filled with more young scholars than ever, and we are teaching 2,274 students. This year, Calumet High School and Calumet High School of Technology add their first senior classes. We welcome the class of '10 to the Calumet campus!

We have also added 8th and 10th grades to the Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy, putting us on track to graduate our first class in 2012. The demand for a Perspectives education is growing - our waiting list for 9th grade at the Math & Science Academy is continuing to expand, and we have many more students than seats available.

Here's to another year of progress!
Attendance Sets Records
Why is attendance so important? The more days a student misses, the less likely they are to attain proficiency in school subjects, and the less likely they are to graduate. On average, a Chicago Public School middle or high school student misses 38 days (a 79% attendance rate) - losing more than an entire month of instruction.

Perspectives students, across all five schools, have an average attendance rate of 92%. We already know the result of high attendance rates in our schools: interested and engaged students, who face academic challenges head-on and succeed. It is no wonder that since 2006, 89% of our students have attended college. Our ambitious goal for the 2009-10 school year is a 95% attendance rate!
New Technology: NetTrekker d.i.
Angel HeardStarting this school year, students and teachers across the Perspectives network will have access to NetTrekker d.i., a powerful online curriculum resource. NetTrekker d.i. promotes differentiated instruction by allowing users to select content that matches individual students' strengths, interests, and needs. In addition to being an engaging way for students to explore their interests, NetTrekker d.i. will be used to allow students to develop their own instructional experience. The content organized within NetTrekker d.i. is aligned with Illinois state educational standards, and will be used in conjunction with student test results to identify resources for helping students master state standards.
Student Spotlight
Kaylor Oscar of Calumet Middle School
Kaylor OscKaylor Oscarar is an 8th grader at Calumet Middle School.  Kaylor joined Perspectives in 7th grade, and lives in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. Her favorite A Disciplined Life© Principle is being positive and supportive. To Kaylor, it means, "don't judge people, but make them feel good about themselves." Her bright attitude makes her a leader in the classroom and out.

Kaylor's favorite subject in school is science, and when she grows up, she would like to be a forensic scientist. She enjoys science because the subject deals with "things that make you think." Also, "science can be used to make the world a better place." Making and testing hypotheses are her favorite parts of science class, because it applies to real-world situations. Kaylor makes it a point every day to push herself to do better than yesterday - to "reach for the stars."

In the future, she wants to attend the Calumet High School of Technology. Outside of school, Kaylor loves reading for pleasure. The last book she enjoyed was Twilight, but there are many more on her reading list.
FIRST Robotics Program Launches in 2009
It may only be September, but the FIRST Robotics program is already in full swing! This year's team at the Math & Science Academy includes twenty 9th and 10th grade students. Led by science teachers Joe Michaelis and Dan King, the team meets after school once a week to practice various skills such as pneumatics, programming and electronics in anticipation of the Midwest and Wisconsin Regional competitions, held at the UIC Pavilion and the US Cellular Arena in early March, where the students will compete against schools from across the country. Any adults who have experience and would like to volunteer to help our Robotics Team build their robot, please contact Joe Halli, Program Manager, at jhalli@perspectivescs.org.
