Students Travel West to Study Paleontology
Learning doesn't stop for the summer at Perspectives - year-round learners become lifelong learners, and we strive to place students in academically enriching summer activities.  This summer is no different!  Seventeen students are participating in three innovative programs offered by Project Exploration, the Presidential Excellence Award-winning science, math, and engineering mentoring program co-founded by Dr. Paul Sereno, world-renowned paleontologist at the University of Chicago.

(c) Project ExplorationThe highly competitive Junior Paleontologists program is an intensive summer fieldwork program where students start by studying geology, anatomy, and paleontology at the University of Chicago. Then they head to South Dakota where they work alongside scientists to apply their knowledge on a paleontological dig.

The Dinosaur Giants program places students at science museums, where they learn the scientific facts behind exhibits and how to interpret that information for the public. Then, they serve as exhibit facilitators, leading tours, answering questions, and running interactive programs.

The All Girls Expedition begins in Chicago with intensive classroom sessions where girls learn practical geology, biology, evaluation, and field skills, but then the team spends one week working in the field alongside scientists at Yellowstone National Park.

This week, students are in the classroom gearing up for their hands-on experiences in the coming weeks.  Jameela Jafri, the All Girls Expedition coordinator, noticed that "The girls are looking forward to Yellowstone and you can tell by their level of participation."
Be a Mentor!  Invite a Student Into Your Career

Every student in our junior class is matched with a professional mentor at a local business, where they intern for five weeks during their second semester. Using the resources of Chicago area workplaces as classrooms, our juniors are exposed to career-based skills and gain insight into the day-to-day activities of their mentors.

As our junior class expands to 162 students, we are in need of more mentors and internship sites for the upcoming school year. Students are matched up with mentors who work in their field of interest. In previous years, these have included law firms, hospitals, banks, engineering firms, restaurants, university departments, and small businesses.
