Our Progress, Our Challenges: A Letter from the Founders
Dear Friend of
Perspectives,
In 1994, we were teachers with a vision of what we thought
high-quality urban public education could be. With a $1,000 grant and a
commitment to provide Chicago
students access to rigorous and meaningful education, we started Perspectives.
Since then we've grown to five campuses with a current enrollment of almost
1,700 students. By the year 2011 we will have 2,700 students when all our
schools are filled to capacity.
Our Progress:
Our 12-year-old Rodney D. Joslin Campus opened in 1997. Since then we have added three Calumet campuses in a former Chicago Public School
building, and our Math & Science Academy,
created in partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Today, over 95% of our seniors go to college and after three years of tracking,
78% are still enrolled! This rate far exceeds the national average for
underserved youth of color in our country.
At Perspectives we integrate our principles of A Disciplined LifeŠ into every aspect of our curriculum and
our culture. These principles set the tone for how we work, communicate
and achieve together as a community. Perspectives students, parents, teachers
and alumni consistently share that A Disciplined LifeŠ is the cornerstone of our
success. We agree!
We are now just two years away from realizing our dream of operating a
sustainable network of high performing public schools, where our young scholars
are expected to go to college. Most of our students are the first in their families to
go to college - ultimately, they are setting a new standard in their family for
generations to come. This is real change!
Our Hope:
We need you today - more than ever, to help us finish what you have so
generously helped us start. In today's financial climate Perspectives faces the
challenge of raising funds that are needed to fill the revenue gap created by
economies of scale as we ramp up to full enrollment. Once we have all five of
our schools fully enrolled, we will have reached a point of sustainability
where we will not have to rely on fundraising to operate. We are asking for your support in this last
stretch of network building!
Thank you for giving
so generously over time and for staying with us in this movement to build
better schools for kids in Chicago.
Our commitment is unwavering and we will work every day to ensure that our
students, families, and communities are getting the schools they deserve.
Gratefully,
Diana Shulla-Cose Kim Dixon

Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus Senior
Angel Heard wins full scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago!

"When I
came to Perspectives Charter Schools, I never thought that the 26 principles of
A Disciplined LifeŠ
could change my life. But these
principles opened my eyes to the world and taught me that there is more to
education. It takes an open mind to
accept new possibilities and change. It
took all of these principles to get me where I am now. I am a lifetime learner."
- Angel Heard, Class of 2009

Preparing students for success in college, the workplace, and in life - Perspectives is changing lives one student at a time.

Enroll now at Perspectives!
This year
100% of our graduates were accepted into college.
Our five
schools are non-selective sixth through twelfth grade "small schools" currently
serving students in the neighborhoods of Auburn-Gresham, Grand Boulevard and
the South Loop. We are particularly seeking to fill grade 6th, 7th
and 8th grade classes.
