debbieA MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL DEBBIE DEES

Greetings!

We are only a few weeks into the new year, but we have already enjoyed some very big events in our community. The whole cluster gathered for a game at Coolray Field to see the Gwinnett Braves take on the Syracuse Chiefs. But, the students from the cluster were the real stars of the show. The following evening, it seemed like the entire population of Lilburn, Lawrenceville and Snellville was at the Georgia Dome. When so many show up at these types of events, I am reminded just how blessed we are to live and work in such a vibrant community that supports the school and its students.  Speaking of "vibrant", check out some of the ways our fans showed their school spirit at the Dome.

Our teachers are bringing that same kind of energy to the classroom.  They are working hard to connect content and kids to make the act of learning dynamic and compelling.  Our next big community event is the schoolwide Open House on September 10 at 6:45 p.m.  We'll open our doors to you to show off what's happening at school.  I guarantee you'll come away impressed with the learning environment our staff has created.

Parents, students, teachers and administrators, even the community at large, are all stakeholders in the success of Brookwood High School.  Your support means a lot to us.  We look forward to connecting with you on the 10th.

Warmly,

Debbie Dees

P.S.  Your financial support of the school and the PTSA helps us with the extras that make Brookwood great.  Please visit www.mypaymentsplus.com to make your contribution.

Seven Broncos Taking Calculus II at Georgia Tech

Ga Tech Calc Class
The class is truly interactive. Brookwood students can see the Georgia Tech professor and he can see them. What the teacher writes, appears on the board at Brookwood. There is a speaker box into which the students may ask questions. Or, they can type questions, so that they pop up on the teacher's computer screen.

Seven Brookwood students join 200 college students who are taking Calculus 2 at Georgia Tech. The high school students get the class via a video-conferencing system in a Brookwood classroom each day from 8:00-9:00 a.m.  Homework is sent to Georgia Tech electronically. Tests and quizzes are sent by UPS.

In addition to the seven BHS students, there are a few from Parkview, Grayson and Archer.  Mill Creek, GSMST, Peachtree Ridge and North Gwinnett are also host schools.  There are other host sites in other counties throughout the metro-Atlanta area. The high school students will receive 4 credit hours of college credit each semester and 1.0 high school credit.

More Broncos Master College-Level Work

More Brookwood students than ever before have gained the distinction of "AP Scholar." In the 2011-12 school year:

  • 178 students received scores of a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.
  • 74 students received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
  • 134 students received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
  • 28 students received an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

In addition, results from Advanced Placement (AP) exams this past spring show that more Brookwood students are challenging themselves with college-level work and are mastering this higher-level material.  The College Board results show that 2311 AP exams were given to Brookwood students during the 2011-12 school year, with 78% of students scoring a three or better. Participation in AP classes and exams provides students with more rigorous classroom experiences, prepares them for college expectations, and, in most cases, gives them college credit while still in high school.

Actors Share Experience with Drama Club

Professional actor and Brookwood alumna, Galen Crawley recently returned to Brookwood and visited with drama club students. Dan Ford, also a professional actor, joined her to give students insight into the world of the professional actor, especially those who work in regional theatre. After sharing their resumes and headshots they told about their experiences in New York and now in Atlanta. They also presented a workshop on how to create an Irish accent and answered students questions about their careers. The next drama club meeting is Sept. 25. Student dues are only five dollars and can be paid at www.mypaymentsplus.com.
