Cary KennedyGreetings!

Most colleges and universities use admission tests to determine a student's readiness for college. We want Brookwood parents to feel informed and students to feel confident and prepared as they make decisions about when and how many times they should test.

On October 17, all Brookwood 10th graders will take the PSAT during the school day free of charge. Most students will not prepare, instead planning to use the scores as a baseline to indicate how they can expect to perform on the SAT and highlight what areas need improvement. Once PSAT scores are received in December, these students will begin to enroll in SAT prep classes to get ready for the SAT.

Because the PSAT provides valuable experience in learning how to deal with the pressure of taking a timed test and allows students to become comfortable with the general format of the SAT, many students will take the PSAT more than once. Students with top marks on the PSAT during their junior year may qualify for National Merit Scholarships, but, in general, PSAT scores are for practice only and don't "count" against students. If you would like for your 9th or 11th grade student to take the PSAT at school on October 17, you may register on www.mypaymentsplus.com.  There is a $15 fee for 9th and 11th graders.

Most students take the SAT for the first time between March and June (or both) of their junior year. There are also opportunities in October, November, December and January of a student's senior year to take or retake the test. Common advice says that a student should take the SAT two to three times, using SAT prep methods to work on weaknesses prior to each test administration.

While test scores will always be on the minds of parents and students, they are just one factor in the college admission process. Some colleges do not even require a college admission test. Doing well on the SAT is not a guarantee that a student will be accepted into the college of his or her choice. Not doing as well as hoped is not the end of the world. For more information about the admission requirements of your favorite school, visit the college search section of the College Board website.

Sincerely,

SAT or ACT?

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, for the first time, the majority of Georgia's 2012 grads took the ACT, either instead of or in addition to the SAT.  Some see the ACT as an easier alternative to the SAT. However, the SAT remains the dominate test for college bound seniors from Georgia and throughout the eastern U.S.  More from the AJC.

Description: ACT measures what a student has learned in particular subject areas. SAT is more of an aptitude test that measures a student's verbal and reasoning skills.

Sections: ACT has five components - English, math, reading, science and an optional writing test. SAT has three components - critical reading, math and writing.

Cost: The ACT costs $35 without the optional writing test and $50.50 with the writing test. The SAT costs $50.

Length: ACT takes two hours and 55 minutes without the writing test and three hours and 25 minutes with the writing test. SAT takes three hours and 45 minutes.

Top score: A 36 is the top score on the ACT. A 2400 is the top score on the SAT, though because many colleges and universities do not require that students submit their writing score, 1600 is commonly held to be the top score.

Guessing: ACT does not penalize for guessing. SAT does penalize wrong answers.

Which schools want which test? In general, schools east of the Mississippi River request the SAT, and schools west of the river often request the ACT. However, many colleges and universities throughout the country accept scores from either test.

How Do Brookwood Students Stack Up on the ACT?

2012 ACT scores were released late last week. Brookwood's composite ACT score was 24.1. Georgia's average score was 20.7. The nation's average score was 21.1.

ACT and SAT Prep classes are offered nearby. We have compiled a list here. When PSAT scores are returned to students, they are given a code for the College Board website which offers practice & instruction based on individual student weaknesses.
