FLOWERS

I hope that you all take advantage of the flowers and herbs available this year in addition to your wonderful produce! There are six 100' beds of flowers for picking and I would like to share some of my excitement and 'learning experiences'. Planning began in the blurry aftermath of Valentine's Day at the flower shop where I spend my off-seasons. It was a relief pouring through catalogues and books full of images of blooms other than red roses. My goal was to provide you with a variety of bouquet choices; different colors, textures and bloom times so that hopefully there is something for everyone to enjoy (and so that I could experiment).

Overall, I foresee it being a success. I am very excited to have three succession plantings of the sunflower varieties, and that there will at least be Calendula blooming for the first summer pick-up. Some of the difficulties or learning experiences from this adventure have been negotiating greenhouse space for the seeds to start in (vegetables take up a lot of room and have priority), and lamenting over the loss of most of the butterfly weed. Hopefully the slugs appreciated their lunch. For a visual on learning experience you can also tour the crooked rows of snapdragons and ocean pearls from one of my first tractor driving attempts. I hope you have as much fun with the flowers this year as I have, and thank you all for the opportunity!
