Weekly Harvest
Due to the the unusually wet weather, we are not able to predict what crops will be available for a given pick up day.  We do know that we will have winter squash and potatoes in the coming weeks and sweet potatoes after that available to all.  All other crops will be rotated through the pickup days and times as there are not sufficient quantities for any particular day or week.

Good ol' Sweet Potatoessweet potato

The sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, is part of the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae. They are not directly related to the common potato of the Solanaceae family.

New transplants are purchased each year to prevent the possibility of transferring diseases from saved roots to new plants. The above ground growth of the sweet potato is a long vine with broad leaves, while underground tubers send out runners to form more tubers. This explains the varied sizes you will find available in your CSA share. Don't hesitate to try the 'fingerling' sweet potatoes. They cook in less time and are great for kids.

You may have noticed the sweet potatoes filling the greenhouse last week. After the sweet potatoes are harvested they are cured for 2 weeks at 80 degrees. Curing helps heal any wounds and improves the flavor of the sweet potato by converting the starch to sugar.

If you do not plan to cook your sweet potatoes right away, they should be stored in a dark, dry location at 55-60 degrees. Do not wash the tubers if storing. The excess moisture will invite decay.
