Tomato Tasting and Potluck Supper

Thursday, August 18 from 6:00 to 8:00pm

Heirloom TomatoesDon't miss out on this summer's social gathering at the farm. Tomatoes are in full swing and the variety is something to see and taste! Join in the camaraderie of fellow farm members and taste the season's bounty. Need some ideas on what to do with all that zucchini? Share ideas and swap recipes.

Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish that will serve their family and 6 other people. This is a BYOP event - please bring your own plates, forks, knifes. We have plenty of tables, but bring chairs if you can. Or bring a blanket and enjoy a real outdoor picnic. We'll have Griggstown sausage, wine and beer available for a small donation. Non alcoholic beverages will be available for free.

RSVP to Trina at trinalawry@comcast.net . This is a members only event.

Harvesting Good-Byes
by Farmers Katie, Jess & Jenn

Between trellising the bountiful beds of tomatoes and harvesting literally tons of squash, time has escaped us. Surprisingly, it is already time for our interns to start their next adventures. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Alyssa, Moriah, and Bobby for their hard work and dedication to Pennypack Farm. Let me share some details about their summer at the farm.

The interns aided Raina in educating and entertaining hundreds of College Settlement campers. They worked side by side with the farmers to plant, weed, and maintain the crops since May. They assisted in the harvest that they then dutifully kept stocked on the share room shelves. Their addition to the crew has been unforgettable.

Intern Alyssa

Alyssa took initiative with the construction of the new hoop house. Many days she was Dennis's right-hand woman with the project. She was so dedicated, that she took the instruction manual home to study. Alyssa's unwavering composure and steady rhythm offered balance even on the hottest days.   Her talent with gluten free desserts will be missed, especially by Andy.

Moriah had a constant resolve when Intern Moriahworking. She is a force. This was noticed by one of our greeters, who praised her zest for work. Moriah even asked if she could stay late in order to gain more farm experience. Her interest in our soil amendments led her to compare and compile information from soil tests from past years. Her determination and fortitude mixed with a smile and a giggle will be missed.

Bobby added extraordinary enthusiasm to anyIntern Bobby farm task. Only his outgoing personality could flourish under the constant attention of a predominantly female crew. The farm joke is that his internship was in Women's Studies with an emphasis in farming. All jokes aside his dedication to learning has served as an inspiration. Bobby's colorful plaid shirts, humor, and vocal entertainment will be missed.

Their last days are approaching in the upcoming weeks. Please take the opportunity to thank them for their hard work if you see them in the share room or in the fields. Harvesting good-byes means storing fond memories and cultivating good friends.

The College Settlement Campers at the Farm

Every summer, campers from our land host, The College Settlement of Philadelphia, visit the farm. Camp groups come for day-camp or for two-week sessions. In the first week's session, interns and staff give campers a tour of the farm while teaching how the crop starts as a seed in the greenhouse, all the way to a ripe vegetable in the field. For the remainder of the first week's session and most of the second week's veggie twistersession campers learn and play in the Edible Classroom, located right between the herb beds and the solar panel. In the Edible Classroom, campers do a variety of farm chores from watering (a favorite on hot days), to weeding, mulching and making potting soil.. We also play educational farm games such as Veggie Twister (think "right hand, stem!"), and Farm Fear Factor. During Fear Factor campers break up into two groups and pick mystery food items from the farm and challenge the other team to taste with eyes closed, encouraging kids to try something new and learn about their mystery food.  Our goal is to teach about sustainable farming and get campers to think about how and where their food is grown and how that relates to their health and the protection of the environment.

These (fresh picked raspberries) taste better than fruit snacks!
