Hoop-House Raising - May 21

Hello all. Farmer Dennis here (again). I hope you're all enjoying the lovely spring weather we're finally experiencing. We farmers are very busy catching up putting plants in the ground as the rainy weather set us back a bit. Your labor as volunteers is always appreciated and at this time more so than ever.

With that in mind, I'd like to announce that May 21st is a share duty day open to all to come and pitch in with the never-ending tasks of the farm. Hoop HouseThe main task of the day will be the erection of the frame of our new hoop house though there will be other work for the less tool oriented or technically inclined such as weeding etc.

Volunteers who are handy with tools and comfortable working on ladders will be needed urgently but there is plenty of work for anyone willing to Hoop Housetighten a screw or hold things up. I'll give my "first-born" for any who are also willing to bring portable impact drills with bits and sturdy stepladders (the top of hoop trusses are 16').

There is plenty of prefabrication that needs to get done prior to May 21st so any so inclined can contact me about setting up a time to get it done.

Anyone interested in coming out and helping (in any capacity) can just show up May 21st between 10 am and 3pm(?). Those willing to bring tools to the event or do prefabrication work prior to the event should contact me at dennisreil@yahoo.com. I'll be onsite early (8 am) so you can get an early start (hoop house work only) if you like.

If it takes a village to raise a child, it certainly will take a good number of stalwart Pennypack shareholders to raise a hoop house. In the grand tradition of a barn raising lets come together as a community and get it done in grand style.

Hope to see you there!
Farmer Dennis

PS I'd be interested in any ideas about food, music and possible libations (after the work!) to truly make it a community celebration. Anyone?

Notes from the Edible Classroom

RainaConnecting people to their food can take on many forms. Think about what you ate for dinner last night. How many of the ingredients can be traced back to a farm? As the summer progresses we hope many of your meals will come from a local farm. If you belong to a CSA week after week of kale can become a bore, and getting your family to happily eat their kale without complaint becomes a challenge. Try involving the family in the kitchen. Keep little hands busy tearing greens for a salad and ask the kids for their input on a meal.

Improving family health through cooking and eating well, is one of Pennypack Farm's educational focuses, and so, we have put together some hands-on cooking classes for adults, teens, and parent-child pairs. We hope this summer brings you closer to your food, and closer to your loved ones.
