Yellow Springs Farm Tour

Last Saturday, 11 PFEC members toured a local goat farm. Highlights included tasting a variety of flavored fresh chevre and their delicious aged Red Leaf cheese, watching the evening milking and bottle feeding 1 week old kids.

We support this farm. If you want to be part of their Goat Cheese CSA, which still has openings for 2011, click here.

Many thanks to Al and Catherine Renzi and their herd of Nubian goats for a delightful afternoon.

Hunger Walk A Success

Thank you to friends and family who donated to the Walk Against Hunger. We reached our goal of $3,000!

Team Pennypack

Now, 8 families in West Philadelphia will be able to purchase subsidized Pennypack Farm CSA shares by making small weekly payments with their food stamps!

For several years, our farm staff have had a stand at Clark Park Farmer's Market (run by The Food Trust) in West Philly. Families will be recruited from our customers there who make purchases with food stamps. Several families have expressed interest.

Providing fresh, seasonal food to "food deserts" and food cupboards in the Greater Philadelphia area is a vital part PFEC programming.

Students Helping at Pennypack Farm

From Katie Fotta

I am happy to report that we have a remarkable assembly of high school students completing their community study or senior independent projects at Pennypack Farm this spring. We have one senior from Barrack Hebrew Academy, who has already completed a week of service and is proving to be a great help. Starting Mid-May for three weeks, we have 8 seniors from Upper Dublin High School and one from Abington Friends School. Yes that is a total of 10 eager, enthusiastic, energized high school students, the biggest team so far.

The students will be helping the farmers with the daily operations of the farm, including seeding, transplanting, weeding, and harvesting. There are also some larger projects we intend for them. Our perennial beds need to be cleared of debris and replenished with more native perennials. There is a large section of the back driveway that needs to be seeded in grass. Other fun work includes mulching & weeding brambles, mulching root crops, and trellising various vegetables.

As you can tell we are excitedly anticipating the amount of work they can accomplish. I want to thank them in advance for their hard work. Pennypack Farm continues to flourish and thrive with the generous help not only from high school students, but also from our ever present reliable volunteer force. THANK YOU!

If any individuals are interested in volunteering at Pennypack Farm, please feel free to stop by Monday-Friday from 9-5, or email me at katie@pennypackfarm.org. We are still open to any students, who need to fill any service projects.
