Why are the Pennypack Farmers, Board of Directors and Farm Friends Walking to Fight Walk Against HungerHunger?

Imagine not knowing where your next meal is coming from. That's the painful reality for nearly 1 in 4 people in Philadelphia. And 1 in 3 children across the United States.

In America:
  • More than 49 million Americans live in households that struggle to put food on their tables.
  • Half of all American children will receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits before age 20. That figure is 90% for African-American children.
In the five-county Philadelphia region:
  • Nearly 600,000 people now rely on SNAP to buy groceries for their families. That's a 40% increase since the start of the recession. Bucks and Montgomery counties experienced the largest increases.
  • Last year, nearly half of all children in Philadelphia received food from food pantry.
How does the farm give back?

In 2010 Pennypack Farm donated 2000 pounds of fresh vegetables to 3 area food cupboards. In addition to the food cupboard donations, this year, we plan offer significantly discounted CSA shares to 8 West Philadelphia families. This area of Philadelphia is considered a "food desert", an area with limited access to affordable and nutritious foods. Our farmers have a connection to this area through the Clark's Park Farmers Market which they participate in every Saturday.

In order to fund these additional shares, we need to raise $3000. Thanks to a generous donor, we have already raised $1000! Now, we need your help. . .

Will you consider donating $25, $50 or more?

Donating is easy!
1. Visit http://www.hungercoalition.org/hungerwalk/
2. Click on the big blue "make a donation" box ",
3. When prompted, search for team Pennypack Farm.
4. Choose one of our team members to support and follow the prompts - don't worry if you don't know which one of us to support-what's important is that you make a donation!

If you have any questions about Pennypack Farm's participation in this event or in our food insecurity program, please feel free to contact me at president@pennypackfarm.org.

The facts on hunger were taken from The Hunger Coalition - more information can be found at their website.

My sneakers are laced. . .are you ready to fight hunger with me?

BeekeepingBeehive Restocking

Saturday, April 23 - 4pm

Watch (or maybe help) the restocking of Pennypack Farm beehives. CSA members are  welcome but please judge for yourselves if this is appropriate activity for you and your children. Working in a bee-yard calls for a clear, calm mind and slow and considered movement. Those sensitive to bee venom should certainly reconsider. It should be a fun event for both well-behaved kids and those young at heart too. Please contact me at dennisreil@yahoo.com  if you'd like to attend.

Cod Fishing off Boston Harbor

Friday, April 29

Stellwagen Bank, located 10 miles east of Boston is a rich marine habitat full of life. This trip will focus on fishing cod, haddock and pollack. It is also a great spot for whale watching and there will likely be several species of whales and dolphins feeding on the sand eels that congregate on the bank each spring. Usually fast paced and exciting, this trip leaves from Gloucester, MA and is a full day trip. (Note: This trip is not recommended for those prone to seasickness) Interested?
