Pennypack Farm & Education Center
Entering our 9th Season with a Bang!

Our CSA shares for 2011 sold out before Christmas.

Our second Community Appreciation Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 26...this year's theme: Pennypack Farm is localicious! The event will feature local foods and much will be grown at the farm! More information to come! The event will benefit our Growing Campaign (AKA Tractor Fund) which just surpassed the 50% mark!

As many of you are aware, we have been asked by our land host (The College Settlement of Philadelphia) to hold programs for non-CSA shareholders off site.  We have just signed an agreement with the Resurrection Lutheran Church (corner Mann and Welsh) that allows us to expand our programming for the whole community. The church has a large classroom and a great kitchen. We hope that you will participate in the cooking classes for adults: tell all of your friends.... and just wait until we roll out the Teen Battle Chef program in March. Other kids cooking programs will follow.

This year, we will focus our educational programming on "improving family health through cooking and eating well".These programs are designed for both CSA shareholders and the general public.  It has become clear from that many families do not have a confident cook. It is our hope that with our basic skills series for adults and our kids cooking programs, we can make a lasting impact on family nutrition and help address the growing obesity epidemic. Most importantly...we hope that families will enjoy cooking, tasting and eating together.

Our search for additional growing fields, educational facilities and perhaps a location for the Local Foods Market is continuing. We are researching many opportunities, meeting great people and learning much about local politics................... more as things develop.

We said our goodbye's to our wonderful Farm Manager, Fred Beddal, and wish him the best in the Boston area. Next week, we have interviews with several great candidates that will not be able to replace Fred... but have much to offer our farm.

Be sure to attend our Sustainability Movie series.

So... despite the cold...lots of action at the farm. Many thanks to our wonderful community that continues to support and inspire us.

Happy New Year!

Herbal & Homemade Remedies Study Group
On the fourth Thursday every month, a small consistent group of people have been gathering to study and share information about the use of plants and other beneficial products that support health. This same group has applied their 4-hour share-duty by being responsible for planting, watering and weeding the herb beds at the farm. The group meets in private homes during the winter, and at the farm from April through October. We are a shared leadership group where everyone is a presenter at least once. If you would like to be sent monthly announcements about the topics, time and location of the meetings, kindly send your name, phone, and email address to Susan Curry at suscurry@comcast.net.
