Meet the Pennypack Farm Interns

Sam Long
Naturally, I came to the farm for food.  Well, an experience in food.  I came back to my family's house in Upper Dublin after a year in Connecticut attending Wesleyan University.  At Wesleyan I was learning about Environmental Studies with a focus in food policy.  I read a lot about organic farming and found it endlessly fascinating.  I was learning about the importance of our food choices, and how they impact the environment, human health, and the welfare of animals.  So during summer break I wanted to acquire a hands-on experience on a "real-life" farm.  When my parents joined the CSA at Pennypack Farm I attended the orientation and respected the farm's sustainable and educational goals.  I asked to sign on as a frequent volunteer and soon became a seasonal intern.

The first year at the farm was very educational.  I learned everything from direct seeding and transplanting, to sheet mulching and weeding.  The farmers are great teachers and their mentoring doesn't get enough credit.  And I don't just learn about farming.  At lunches I get schooled about the business side of a non-profit as well as the legal struggles that a small farm like Pennypack faces.   This year, my second summer at the farm, I hope to be a hard worker but also be a creative force that reinforces the messages that Pennypack farm addresses about sustainability, education, and community responsibility.
