Notes from Farmer Fred May 20, 2010
Meet the Farmers!
Next Friday, May 28, marks the kick-off of our 2010 summer season.
On your visits to the farm over the course of the season, you may not always see the farmers, whose workday typically begins at 6:30 am and ends at 4pm on share pick-up days. But feel free to say hello or ask questions of the farm staff if you see us; putting a face on the food is part of what community supported agriculture is all about!
Here's a primer on the farmers, to help with conversation.
Andy Andrews, in his fifth season as farm director, is also a deep-sea fisherman.
Fred Beddall, in his third season as farm manager, brews beer and is growing a few hop vines at the farm.
Dennis Reil, in his third season, is the poultry manager and has spent many years at a zen buddhism monastery in the Catskills.
Jessica Gerani, in her second season as a farmer, used to work as a bank teller; she spent last winter feeding the hungry in New Orleans.
Pam Winkler, our new farmer this season, has a masters degree in social work and wants to figure out a way to blend farming with social work.
