Local Foods Market Update As many of you are aware, we have had to close the Local Foods Market at Pennypack Farm.
Why? We have been notified that our little "market" has been deemed a "retail food establishment" by Montgomery County. Thus it is in violation of our R2 Horsham Township zoning. We have also been told that our Port-A-Pot is not an approved sanitation system for a "retail food establishment". We cannot improve this system because we do not have access to the street sewer system.
So..... we have had to close this service to local farmers and our members.
There are lessons for all of us in this recent development. One lesson is about how hard it is to change the paradigm from "safe" supermarket food to a vibrant local food system that supports better health and the local economy. Another is that legislators (on all levels) need to understand that farms must be able to have diversified ventures to stay economically viable. This requires a review of local zoning ordinances, especially in suburban communities, with an eye to support sustainable farming.
Is there a chance that the Market will re-open in the future?
Our Board of Directors is actively looking at re-opening options. We are committed to helping the community in their quest for locally grown, locally produced food and supporting farmers who struggle to make their farm operations viable.
Stay tuned for more........................

Medicinal Herbs
Have you been curious about those 'medicinal herb beds' at the farm? Please join us to learn more! We are Pennypack's Medicinal Herbal collaborative. We meet monthly on the 4th Thursday of each month from 6:30 to no later than 8:30.
Our next meeting is Thursday May 27th at the Farm at 6:30. We all contribute to the meetings and activities. We research, study and share information about different medicinal and culinary herbs. We make herbal remedies at each meeting, using the Pennypack herbs. Sometimes there is a slight charge for materials. Over the last year we've made herbal lotions, lip balm, healing cream, cough syrups, cold remedies, teas, and a whole variety of other herbal things. We grow, tend, harvest, plan, prepare and use plants for remedies, cosmetics, foods and cleaning. If you would like further information, please call Luanne Fisher at 215-641-0571 or email Hilarie at turkeyfly@comcast.net. Or just come to our next meeting; but please let us know you are coming so we have enough supplies. Looking forward to seeing you! |
Do you know a family that cannot afford to feed their family well?
We have received a small amount of money to further expand our subsidized shares for low income families. We are looking to identify: - Families that are committed to eating as much "organic" food as they can afford
- Families that cook
- Families that are willing to try new foods
If you, or your church/synagogue knows of local families who fit the description above and are currently eligible for food stamps (SNAP program). Please reply to Margot. |
