Forage News

The AgriLife Extension has important advice about hay that was purchased from outside of Texas.  Purchasing non-native hay was essential to sustaining herds this summer, however it may have brought a pesky problem into Texas and right onto your land.  Weeds!

The weeds that may have hitched a ride to Texas in your hay can cause long term damage to your land.  Read here to learn how to identify these possibly harmful plants and to learn how to manage and prevent their spreading.  You will also find tips on the best way to manage your out of state hay to minimize exposure of these aggressive weeds.
Exemption Registration Number

tax exempt

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, a person claiming an exemption from sales tax on the purchase of certain items used in the production of agricultural and timber products is required to have a Texas Agriculture and Timber Exemption Registration Number (Ag/Timber Number).

Livestock Disaster Program Deadlines

cattle

The drought has been rough on our animals, land and pocket books. Disaster assistance is available to eligible ranchers and livestock producers.

The USDA Farm Services Agency list of upcoming deadlines is available here. Be sure to stay ahead of these deadlines because late filings will not be accepted. Information and links to additional information can be found on our website.
Deer and the Drought

The drought has been hard on deer and hard on breeders and hunters. Feeding programs will make a big difference in the productivity and health of your herd. Check out this short video for more information.

Don't forget we sell Antlermax, Deer Chow and Quick Draw blocks too! Come in and stock up!

Hardware Tips

If you plan to store a power tool for 30 days or more, a few easy steps will help your equipment be ready for action when you are ready to go back to work.

  1. To get the equipment ready for storage, clean it first.
  2. Remove and examine the spark plug for excessive carbon buildup and adjust the electrode gap to its specification. See instruction manual.
  3. Check the spark arresting screen. (It is a small screen at the muffler exhaust that is usually fastened with a screw or clip. Carbon can build up on the screen. The screen must be cleaned or replaced with a new one.)
  4. Empty the fuel tank. Standard pump gasoline quickly deteriorates and should not be kept over 30 days in any season.
  5. Put it away. For long-term storage, a dry and, if possible, dust- and frost-free place would be ideal. Some equipment can easily be hung on a wall, so you can save space. Store it out of the reach of children.

Gardening Advice

Here are some tips for your landscape and gardens as we move into December and prepare for winter.

Hand watering is best right now. Pay close attention to any water restrictions in your area.

Only water the plants that need it.

Do you plant bulbs for the spring?  Now is the time to get the in the ground.  If you are an organic gardener then consider using Soft Rock Phosphate when planting.

Now is a great time to get your soil tested for spring gardens. Try the Texas Plant and Soil Lab.

Mid-month is time to start planting tomatoes and peppers from seed in your greenhouses.

Looking to add woody plants like trees and shrubs to your yard?  Now is the time for planting them.
