Flea and Tick Season is here! Are you ready?
When it's time for fleas and ticks to terrorize your pet and home, it's helpful to know what makes these pests "tick." They can live just about anywhere, but crave the cozy haven of your pet's furry coat. A simple walk around the neighborhood with your pet can draw these tiny fiends indoors, especially during warm and humid months. More than 65 percent of American households include a family pet or pets. Statistically, fleas and ticks are bound to infest your favorite feline or best friend.
Protect yourself and your pet with flea and tick, and mosquito products available over-the-counter.
Be aware of these flea, tick, and mosquito characteristics:
Fleas are especially prevalent in warm, humid areas such as the southeast and Gulf Coast area.
They abound in the months of May through September.
Ticks like heavily wooded regions and areas with brush, thick/tall grass, and a moist environment.
Mosquitoes have no preference - they like living just about anywhere.
Be especially careful to reduce the amount of standing water around your home, yard and garden to minimize your pets' and family's exposure to these bugs.
One adult female flea can lay as many as 50 eggs a day.
A tick lays 100 eggs at a time.
Eagle Hardware Farm & Ranch carries flea & tick products to help your pets. Stop in today and check out our supply, your pets will thank you!
Snake Bite Cautions for Horse OwnersSpring and summer months bring an increase in horse activities and the end of hibernation for rattlesnakes. As they begin to emerge and leave their dens, until their return during cooler fall weather, this movement and activity increases the incidence of horses bitten by rattlesnakes. Of the 27 species of rattlesnakes in the United States, 11 are found in Texas. The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and the Prairie Rattlesnake are the most common rattlesnakes found in the western part of Texas where veterinarians treat an average of about 6 - 10 cases per year. Over 90% of these bites occur on the face, primarily the nose, in pastures or fields while the horse is grazing. Read more on our website!
This time of year is frustrating for the gardener who wants to provide nectar for the season's first butterflies. Many late spring and summer perennials are not blooming yet. While the garden may have daffodils, irises and azaleas, they do not tempt a butterfly in search of a much-needed meal.
It is almost painful for the butterfly gardener to watch the insects flit through the garden, hovering over flowers but not alighting to sip. Several inexpensive, reliable annual and perennial nectar sources to plant now in containers or in the ground are widely available at nurseries. Get more great tips on attracting butterflies to your backyard on our website.
